The Dream machine; that's its nic-name. Apart from being a dream to use, it produces dreamy images, combining divine clarity with angelic haze, if that's what you want. It produces images like no other lens I've used and mounted on the front of an FX body, it gives me perfect preview too. A dream it truley is and being caught without it would be my worst nightmare. I've given it 5 stars for picture quality because for the work I do, portraits, it is fault-free. Size and weight also gets a 5 because although it is heavy, this adds to stability when off-tripod. As for size, well, it couldn't be that fast if it wasn't that big. Its size also lends to the impression of professionalism, and inspires confidence both sides of the glass. In terms of value for money; how do you put value on the best? It is what it is and that comes at a price but the results have a far greater and higher form of value than can be measured in mere currency. If you're insisting on perceived monetary value though, it's worth remembering that unlike the bodies, the cared for lens's do not depreciate much, if at all. So the chances are, you'll get your money back if and when you ever sell them. What else can you say that about, these days? For portraits, the lens doesn't need to focus quickly and very often, mine's switched to manual focus anyway. Having said that, the auto-focusing is pin-sharp but it could be, that for other uses, the auto-focus may not be fast enough. The hood mount is a little bit fiddly, being metal and threaded but again for my main use, the hood is hardly ever used. As with all things, it's a matter of purpose and if, like mine, it's portraits the Nikon AF D 85mm - F/1.4 is one of two of the best lenses in the world; the other one being the Nikon 135mm - F/2 DC, arguably, the best of all.Read full review
A lens that was introduced in I think mid 90’s! On my D800 it’s absolutely awesome you will not regret buying this as long as you accept mild colour fringing coma honestly this is minor to the bokeh this m fk give’s! Honestly just buy it! I own 300 f2.8 & other awesome lenses & this is a do it all lens! Just buy it!😉

The AF performance is really good on a D3s body and will most likely work very well on D3 and D3x too. I guess the AF will be a bit slower on D4 body due to less battery capacity. If you own any other digital Nikon body, I will recomend the AF-S G f/1,4 instead.

The 85mm f1.4 on a full frame camera is my favourite lens. I love how, when set to a wide apperture, it throws the background out of focus and makes the subject stand out. It also produces great colours and light in the picture. However, I would only use this lens when photographing one person. Why? Two reasons. Firstly, in my opinion, the lens is a little on the slow side when it comes to focusing. How slow? Well it's not a problem when the subject is fairly stationary, but when there is a lot of movement. especially towards the camera, the lens hunts resulting in missed shots. Secondly, the large apperture is counter productive when photographing a couple of people (or more) together. The depth of field is so shallow, one of them will be out of focus if they are not in the same plane. The advantage of the wide apperture is lost in this instance and it would be better to use an apperture set to around f5.6. I think it would be better for this situation to use a zoom. it focuses faster and is just as sharp at this apperture. Using a wide apperture (f1.4 - 1.8) requires good focusing technique. The lens is very sharp, even wide open, but it is so easy to unintentionally focus on the wrongs part of the face resulting in the features you wanted in focus being out of focus. For example, the lashes would be in sharp focus, but the eye itself is blurry. But when you do get the focus right , the lens produces a wonderful image. Many use this lens for its low light capability. I've used this indoors on a D3 set at a high iso, hand held, without a flash. This is great for capturing the atmosphere without a flash over powering the ambient light, and has also allowed me to not be noticed whilst taking pictures. For example, being discrete is important during wedding ceremonies where flash might not be alllowed during the service. I believe the main consideration about buying this lens, is really about whether to use a prime or a zoom. People say a prime helps you to consider your composition more carefully and you can zoom with your feet. I don't think this is always right. I have found there have been occassions when it has not always been possible or convenient to reposition myself to take a shot with a prime as long as the 85mm. Even when there is enough space to move, the moment and the spontaneity has been lost. I would recommend this lens for single portrait sessions shooting at a wide apperture. It will produce unique images having a beauty that I don't see being achieved with other lens. And the bokeh is popular with people. But for all other situations, I have to say, it has to be a zoom lens.Read full review
