I own a Canon 7D SLR and was using a Canon 18-200mm zoom as my walkabout lens. I had read positive reviews of the original, larger Tamron 18-270mm zoom and bought one in the hope that it would be an upgrade to the Canon zoom. I very quickly realised it was a much superior lens with regard to sharpness, range, build quality and overall performance. Having used it for over a year, whilst still happy with it, I noticed that a couple of points had started to irritate me slightly. Namely the noisy autofocus which at the telephoto end often used to hunt unsucessfully in marginal light conditions, and the fact that the zoom action would become very stiff when the lens was pointed upwards such as when used at an airshow (too stiff for a smooth operation). When the new PZD version was announced by Tamron I tried it out in the shop and found that not only did it resolve the two gripes I had with the older version but that it was noticeably smaller and lighter too. I took the plunge and have not regretted it, this lens really is a joy to use having a great range, fast and quiet autofocus with its hypersonic motor (aka USM in Canon speak) and utter convenience. The quality of the images it produces is good, particularly considering that it has a 15 x zoom range. It cannot compete with a good prime lens and is not in the same image quality league as my Canon EF-S 17-55mm zoom, but for those situations like holidays where the convenience of a single lens is the major consideration, the Tamron would be my first choice.Read full review
A cheap lens that is made cheap. You get what you pay for in this field and this lens is best left on the shelf. Its not sharp and will not work well on a full frame camera
