A challenging but rewarding listen!
Composed for the 1987/88 theatre production of "Macbeth" at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Hamburg, and not released as an album until 1989, this music represents Laibach's more classical tendencies and could not have been much further removed in style from the "Let It Be" album of Beatles covers they released the same year. The mock-classical sleeve design suggests what is in store for the listener... who is treated to a punishing martial classical suite of massed horns, sweeping strings and crashing drums, largely instrumental save from some "Aja"s from Milan Fras and some blood-curdling screams. Stylistically this belongs with other earlier works such as "Nova Akropola" or the other theatre soundtrack "Krst Pod Triglavom - Baptism". Annoyingly, despite the 11 track titles provided, the CD has been mastered as a single track, this forces the listener to take this in as a complete work but also it is not obvious where each title comes in. Like much of their best work, this is a challenging listen but rewarding nevertheless.

Above average collection of industrial dance music.
Above average collection of industrial dance music. The selling point for me was the Severed Heads track "Heart Of The Party (Banana Lid)", an exclusive and radical remix by fellow Australians Boxcar, as an obsessive fan of both acts this was worth the price of entry alone. A rare track "No More Ghosts" by cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy is another welcome addition. The other artists were unknown to me, generally a good standard of dance / instrumental IDM.

Steely Sheffield legends giving a tarnished performance.
From the archives of the defunct ITV franchise Central Television comes this 1992 television special showcasing the talents of one of Sheffield's finest exports during their "Ambient House" period. Here Cabaret Voltaire perform material from their final three albums "Plasticity", "International Language" and "The Conversation", punctuated by snippets of interviews that provide an insight into their work at this time and their place within the ambient house scene. Far from their best work, we are seeing a band almost at the end of it's existence, once ahead of their time but now in a music scene that has caught up and overtaken them. Stephen Mallinder looks lost behind the bank of knobs he is occasionally obliged to twiddle. At times he strums pointlessly at his bass guitar, adding nothing to the electronic riffs coming from Richard Kirk's keyboard. Occasionally Kirk glances over at Mal with a face one could imagine says "what the hell are you doing?". There is a distinct improvement when Mal adds his hushed, half-spoken vocals to several of the tracks. Often unintelligable, even banal, one can still only wonder why these never made it onto the original albums, which could have been greatly improved by their presence. One strength of the performance of course is the visual projections which have always been a significant element of their work. A mixed experience overall, an intriguing insight into this band's late period but far from essential.
