New FULL HD Freeview Receiver & 1080P Recorder DIGITAL TV HD Digibox Set Top Box
20 Sep, 2017
Decent cheap box, just don't expect too much
If you're looking for a bargain-basement FreeView box, for example to convert an HD Ready TV (that doesn't receive HD channels) to one that does, you could consider this one. The box is a little larger than some others of its ilk, and the software is pretty basic, but it does the job. Picture and sound quality are OK. Remote control can be a bit unresponsive (and then the box thinks you pressed a button twice) but is OK if you point the remote at the box and don't go too quickly. Setting up is fairly easy but it is slow to scan all the channels,. Fortunately you don't need to do that often. On FreeView it does a 7-day Programme Guide on all channels -- beware some boxes that don't get a Guide for the HD channels. But it isn't a grid: you get a list of programmes for one channel at a time, which is a pity if you want to see what is on at the moment over a lot of channels, for example. This is pretty standard for these cheap boxes, though. There is no 'Smart TV' or catch up, though it can play films and music on a USB stick of SD card if you plug one in. If you do plug in a memory stick, SD card or USB drive, you can use it to record. Again, pretty basic, but you can set a recording from the Guide or set a time manually. When you look at the list of recordings when you want to watch, though, it shows a filename consisting of the channel name and time of broadcast rather than the name of the programme. You can also pause live TV, but unless you are in time shift mode you cannot rewind -- it isn't recording all the time like more expensive boxes. So if you want to pay as little as possible and recording is only something you would do occasionally, this box will do. But if you don't want to record at all and can stretch to another fiver, I would recommend the Manhattan box instead for its better Programme Guide.
Silverthorne Magnetic Soap Holder Chrome Plated
31 Oct, 2017
Cheap and cheerful, not terribly robust
Plastic body, covered with chrome layer. Looks good when new; only time will tell how long the finish lasts. I had a poor experience with mine. The packaging said you could fix it with adhesive (though recommended using screws) but didn't provide any, so I made do with adhesive pads we had in the house. I don't like drilling holes into tiles because the bit can skid easily, and the holes in the backplate are both round. If one were a slot it would make it possible to get the holder absolutely level before tightening up, making the job easier. The pads weren't strong enough and it fell off, so I fixed it back and left it longer to get more secure before putting soap on it again. Later that night it fell off again. This time the magnetic disc came out. Didn't appear to have been glued all the way round. I fixed it with Araldite and let it cure overnight. When I came to try it, I found it had lost all magnetism. I know that hitting or dropping a magnet can weaken it, but this is ridiculous. It only fell twice. Maybe there was some other magnet behind the disc that went down the drain, but unlikely. Gave up and threw the thing away. I guess it would be alright if you manage to fix it properly first time, but it was worrying that the disc came loose so easily. At the price it isn't bad. The service from bigredtoolbox was good -- prompt delivery, and they offered me a replacement or refund, but I had disposed of the holder by then.
Motorola Moto G4 - 16GB - White (Unlocked) Smartphone

Upgrade in one way; devastating downgrade in others
I bought this as an 'upgrade' to the G3, which I had bought as a phone and for its calendaring app, but found it useful in all sorts of ways I had not envisaged, particularly for my job as an aerial and satellite dish installer, for which there are applications that combine a database of transmitters/satellites and show you onscreen where they are, using the camera. If you need to see whether a location has a clear view of a satellite or whether trees block it, this is invaluable and hard to do any other way (I have yet to find an inclinometer you can sight through). However, the G3 had two serious faults. The screen was too dim to see clearly outdoors even on an overcast day, and it usually failed to react to the swipe you are supposed to use to answer the phone, so I kept losing incoming calls, which was detrimental to my business and very frustrating. Reviews I had read all said the G4 was a worthy upgrade, so I bought one second hand. Firstly, the screen is supposed to be brighter than the G3 and indeed it is. I have not had so much problem using it outdoors, though it is early days yet. Secondly, it is a little larger. Not by much: it is about the same size without a case as the G3 was with one, but it feels more awkward in the pocket and I find I do not carry it around so much. (Now I miss calls because it's left in the van!) Nevertheless, it is no easier to type on and my fingers keep hitting the wrong letters on the virtual keyboard. It's also got more storage than the G3 so I haven't needed to insert an extra SD card -- yet, anyway. As a phone it is as good as or better than the G3. You can answer calls for a start! Although I am a bit deaf I can hear calls clearly in speakerphone mode, and it keeps my contacts and appointments in order and syncs up with my PC, so that is all grand. It even sounds pretty good playing music (for a phone), though nowhere as good as a Bluetooth speaker, of course. It does retain some of the quirks of its predecessor, such as the volume buttons that are wired up the wrong way round. When in lansdcape mode, pressing the left hand button moves the on-screen volume slider to the right and vice versa. Doesn't anyone at Motorola actually use these things? You would have thought they would have noticed by now. But the kicker is this: it has no compass or inclinometer! Rather than being an upgrade, it has omitted two of the most essential pieces of hardware, meaning that the thing now fails to work at all with my aerial and satellite apps. I am furious, and the journos that wrote those refiews without pointing out that it is in fact a downgrade should hang their heads in shame. You may, or course, not have the same needs that I do, but reflect that without a compass, it cannot point you in the correct direction when using Google Maps, which is a real nuisance when walking especially. So all in all it's OK for most people, but for me it fails to meet my needs as well as the G3 did. I shall have to replace it again -- and it won't be with a Mororola.
