Scorsese assembles seven leading directors, himself included, to each provide a full feature length film on an aspect of the blues.
The films each have their own individual style and focus, travelling across America - Mississippi, Memphis, Chicago and more - and exploring the blues through a combination of personal recollection, archive footage and fresh invention. Along the way there are some new projects to bring together traditional blues legends, still living at the time the films were made, with modern blues and even rap artists. Even for someone who has a passing familiarity with the blues, there are guaranteed to be new discoveries in this series and there is the intense pleasure of seeing and listening to some superb surviving archive material and to see it set perfectly in a narrative context.
These are films to enjoy at leisure- I am watching them one by one on the train journey from Edinburgh to London - and I am sure they will be ones to revisit many times in the years ahead.
