Lost Horizon
The Film was better quality than I expected and there were a number of extras including a second ending. The story of the restoration was fantastic because it showed the before and after.I know because one of my Uncles knew the senior projectionist at the Odeon,Chester,and I watched this film in the morning while he was checking for continuity: one of the reasons for it having sections cut out was that two of the male players did not stand the test of time, particularly in England in 1939; their childish or puerile lines were not a part of James Hilton's original work and the view at the time was that either. Robert Riskin the screenplay writer had lost the plot or that Frank Capra was finding work for a couple of old mates! This fits in with his insistence of the so called 'happy ending' version. The last page of the book leaves one on tenter hooks stretching for the answer which is buried in the final few pages and the mention of the German professor named Fredrick Meister "Good heavens-ONE OF THE NAMES THAT CONWAY MENTIONED" "A master in his time of genetics who went into the mountains after visiting Tibet in 1887 and he and his party never returned"
The film was awarded two Oscars for set design and editing and all that happened was that a little more editing was carried out on the two bottom of the bill actors to make it run without irritating quirky 'humor' The German professor was left in place and you must draw your own conclusions as to whom he might be in the film. It is a very good piece of work and in need of a British remake who will get that correct feel to it with a slight hint of documentary and breath taking wide screen work of Borman, Attenborough or Lean and a really intelligent slim,tall, blond English women who will look good in the nude swimming scenes and also on the white stallion,riding , riding, riding, across the uplands with the leading man,who must be built like a barn door strong and angular in his face : true grit and and Let's Roll type of ordinary hero, sort of man, chasing her on his powerful black stallion 'Midnight'
Like the original it should be available with different languages and no swear words.I have the 1936 print of this book and it was first published in 1933. I would recommend this Columbia Classic for Christmas and the book to read in bed. At the end of 2010 the BBC showed the almost complete recording of this film with only around seven minutes missing. It is a digital restored copy without the second happy ending of church bells and waving people and it is very good. jannarta.

The film uses actual olde terminology like the days of yore. and it is a good frolic and value for money. jannarta.
