BMW 5 Series Estate Cars: German Family Cars

The BMW 5 series is one of the German manufacturer’s most famous cars, with the 5 millionth model being produced in 2008. Production on the model started in 1972, and the current generation is the seventh. Used BMW 5 series estate cars are available for sale on eBay with a wide range of specifications.

The early years of the 5 series

Although production on the 5 series started in 1972, the first estate wasn’t available until 1991 for the third generation (E34). However, it wasn’t until the fourth generation (E39) that the BMW 5 Touring (Touring being the name for BMW estate cars) became one of the brand’s most recognised models. This generation introduced more aluminium in the chassis. The engines range from 148 to 282 bhp for petrol (with the M sports model at 394 bhp) and 134 to 190 bhp for diesel.

The fifth-generation (E61)

This version of the model was in production from 2003 to 2010. This generation introduced a range of electronics to improve comfort or assist driving. These include the iDrive entertainment system, autonomous cruise control, active steering, dynamic stability control, a lane departure warning system, and voice control. The engines range from 154 to 362 bhp for petrol and 161 to 282 bhp for diesel. The BMW 5 series sport version, known as the M5, has an S85B50 V10 engine producing 500 bhp. It is the only version of the 5 series with a V10 engine.

What changes did the sixth generation implement?

This generation was produced from 2011 to 2016. It is the first BMW 5 series automatic to offer an 8-speed transmission system. The car is also available as a 6-speed manual transmission. The features introduced for this version of the model include Integral Active Steering (using the rear wheels), blind-spot monitoring, and a speed limit display, which uses a camera to capture speed limits. The engine power ranges from 168 to 444 bhp for petrol (and 553 bhp for the M5) and 141 to 308 bhp for diesel (with a 375 bhp M550d available). The ActiveHybrid, with an electric and petrol engine, produces a combined output of up to 335 bhp.

What can you expect from the seventh-generation models?

The seventh generation of series 5 Touring started production in 2017. They feature a Driving Assistant Plus package, which groups together a range of driving aids, and new massage seats. The engines range from:

  • 168 to 335 bhp for the petrol and hybrid versions.
  • 456 to 617 bhp for the M5 petrol versions.
  • 188 to 315 bhp for the diesel versions.
  • 394 bhp for the M550d xDrive, the diesel M5.
