Styles of sofas, armchairs and suites

For many centuries, especially in France, the chaise longue has been a popular bedroom sofa. 'Chaise longue' literally means 'long chair' and these elegant sofas are essentially upholstered chairs that are long enough to support the legs with a back rest at one end.

While chaise-longues are commonly used as bedroom sofas, you do not need to buy a dedicated sofa, armchair or suite for use in your bedroom. Any type of upholstered furniture can work as well in your bedroom as it does in other parts of your home.

Your bedroom does of course need to be large enough to accommodate a sofa or suite. Many bedrooms are not large enough for a full suite, which is why people with smaller bedrooms often choose to have a single armchair elegantly placed beside the bed or by a window.

Fabric bedroom chairs such as occasional chairs and accent chairs are used less often than living room chairs. This means they are not exposed to as much wear and tear as other sofas and suites, and can therefore be produced in more expensive, delicate and luxurious fabrics, such as woven silk because of less risk of damage.

Bedroom accent chairs of this type are a statement piece, creating a focal point in the room.
