Great Britain Stamps

The long history of British stamps is a fascinating one. From the first iconic Penny Black stamp launched back in 1840, Great Britain stamps have evolved to include ever more creative designs. With each new reigning monarch, a new era of stamps was born. No wonder there are such avid collectors of these tiny pieces of British heritage.

Choose stamps from the time of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V, George VI and our very own long-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Or choose special commemorative stamps that mark the great occasions of our past, from royal coronations to the launch of Star Wars. Youll also find entire stamp collections, as well as beautiful presentation packs and covetable first day covers.

Hinged vs Never Hinged

Choosing stamps according to this criterion can make a big difference to the price of your stamp, as well as how collectable it is. At one end of the scale, you have hinged stamps that have been previously attached to a stamp album using a hinge (adhesive gum paper). When removed from the album, this can leave a hinge mark on the stamp that affects its value. A stamp may be lightly or heavily hinged, with heavily hinged stamps suffering a more prominent mark.

At the other end of the scale, you have ‘never hinged stamps that have not been stuck into an album. You also have regummed stamps, which have been hinged and then had new gum applied when they are removed from the album. This can increase the value of a hinged stamp.

Stamp Quality

The condition of a stamp will affect its value. Ideally, you should choose a stamp in mint condition for optimal collectable value. This means the stamp is in pristine condition with no marks or imperfections. However, understandably, mint condition stamps often fetch a higher price. If you cant stretch to mint stamps, look carefully at the quality and ask the vendor any questions you may have about the condition before you buy.
