Leica Camera Lens Filters

Camera filters change the way an image will look upon exposure. The type of filter you choose to use determines the level of change.

Light rays become polarised when they are reflected by a surface. Filters are used to select which light rays are allowed to enter the camera lens, removing unwanted reflections from any non-metallic surfaces. They also saturate colours and increase contrast.

There are two types of polarising filters - linear filters and circular filters - which both have the same effect. Linear polarisers are suitable for older camera metres, while circular polarisers are for the newer split beam metering systems that are used in auto focus cameras.

Types of Leica camera lens filters

A Leica UVa II filter protects the camera lens from dirt, dust, scratches, marks and damage. It fits to the front of the lens and with Leica's multicoating technology, it can improve optical parameters. It can also be used in combination with other filters due to an additional thread.

A Leica ND - or neutral density - filter has time exposure technology for capturing and reproducing subjects in motion by reducing the amount of light that enters the lens. This type of lens also allows longer shutter speeds to be used. Colour rendition is retained and any unwanted reflections are prevented. An ND filter also allows for the use of larger apertures for photos and videos.

Leica circular polarisation filters will eliminate any unwanted reflections from shiny surfaces, including glass and water. They also enhance colour contrasts. The universal polarisation filter has a 180 degree swing-out mount that enables it to be positioned in front of the viewfinder window, controlling and assessing the polarisation effect prior to exposure. A range of adapters enable the use of multitude lenses.

Leica colour filters are designed for use with black and white photography. This type of filter creates a range of effects using light and contrast by modifying the conversion of colour to greyscale values. The colour of the filter in the scene becomes lighter and its complementary colour becomes darker. Specialised multi coating on the filters is designed to reduce reflections and vignetting.

Leica special effects lenses allow you to experiment with photographic effects including time lapse, flare and perspective.

Leica macro lenses are ideal for highly detailed, close up photography. A macro lens results in the object being photographed appearing larger in the image than it is in real life.
