Sony Macro Camera Lens

Many keen photographers acquire extra lenses to bring things closer, or to give a wider field of view, but a Sony macro camera lens truly opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Most standard camera lenses, whether zoom or fixed focal length, have a limited ability to get in close. Some are better than others, but in general twelve inches is usually as near as the camera can get to an object before the image begins to blur.

Macro lenses on the other hand can focus very close indeed. A small thing like a postage stamp can be approached close enough to fill the entire frame, then, of course, can be enlarged on the computer even more than that, bringing the smallest detail into large, sharp relief.

Close up lenses

Sony macro camera lenses are designed specifically for the job - not just to get in close, but to be sharp all the way across the frame. Most standard lenses lose focus slightly away from the centre.

The Sony SEL30M35 30mm f/3.5 macro lens, designed to fit the Sony E Mount , is one of the smallest and lightest macro lenses available, weighing around 4.9 ounces. It has a 1:1 magnification ratio and can get as close as 0.95 inches (2.4 cm) to the subject and comes with a matching lens hood.

With this lens a photographer can get remarkable results photographing flowers or tiny insects. It also has a very quiet autofocus motor, which makes it suitable for video photography, too.

It's worth noting that when working at such high magnifications any camera shake will be very noticeable, and so a strong, sturdy tripod is always a good idea. Macro telephoto

Sony macro lenses don't just come as short focal lengths however. The Sony 100mm F2.8 macro lens for Sony Alpha DSLR cameras works as a useful telephoto lens in normal use but can also focus very close up.

The advantage of a close focusing telephoto is that the photographer can get in tight to the subject in-camera, while actually remaining a distance away. This is most useful with subjects that might scare easily, like wildlife and insects. The lens's large F2.8 aperture means that pleasing out of focus, bokeh, backgrounds can be easily achieved.

For Sony E Mount cameras, the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS achieves very similar results for Sony's mirrorless camera range and is also optimised for macro work.
