Track Bike

Track bikes are ideal for professional racers and they are best suited to velodromes. With brands such as Boardman, BMC, Cannondale and Pinarello available, it has never been easier for you to find one suited to your own requirements.

Gears

Standard track bike gears are between 84” and 90”. Chainrings have 47 teeth and the sprocket is a size 15. The smaller gear you have, the easier it is for you to pedal. If you have a larger sprocket then it will be harder for you to pedal however you will have a higher level of control over your gears and your acceleration. The gear you choose will depend on the track, the steepness and whether or not the velodrome is indoors or outdoors.

Tyres

Track bikes offer the option of having tubular tyres or clincher tyres. Tubular tyres are the most common and they are incredibly hard wearing. They are also very difficult to change and this is due to the fact that the tyre is glued, or sometimes taped onto the rim. Tubular tyres can also be run at a much higher pressure when compared to clincher tyres. When choosing the tyres for your track bike, finding one with the least amount of rolling resistance is key to the speed and control of the bike.

Chainset

Standard chainsets are the most popular. Many professional track racers prefer stiffer chainsets and this is because they are much more durable. The bolt circle diameter is the distance between the chainring bolt and the chainset. This is measured in millimetres and it is important to match the chainset with the chainring or else the bike wont perform to its highest possible standard.

The handlebars on a track bike are usually flat, allowing the rider to achieve a more aerodynamic stance when riding.
