About viewfinders

A viewfinder is the window on your camera that you look through to compose the image. Often amateur digital photographers prefer to use their camera's LCD screen rather than a viewfinder, whereas many professional photographers tend to prefer viewfinders.

Benefits of viewfinders

There are lots of benefits for photographers of using a viewfinder instead of your LCD screen.

One of the main benefits is increased stability. In order to view the image using the camera's LCD screen you need to hold your camera at a distance from your body. When you use the viewfinder you hold the camera up against your face with your arms tightly together at the side of your body.

This additional stability will reduce shake and helps create a better focused image. It is especially important to use a viewfinder if you are using longer lenses , as the extra weight at the front of the camera will make it difficult for you to hold your camera in position at arms length.

The battery life of your camera is another consideration when deciding whether to use a viewfinder or your LCD screen. Using the LCD screen to compose your images will drain your camera's battery far quicker than the viewfinder will. If you're out and about shooting for some time, that extra battery life means more shots.

LCD screen images tend to lag behind the image that the camera is actually seeing. This means the shot might not turn out as well as you had expected. Another disadvantage of the LCD screen is that when there's a lot of light you'll find it difficult to see your images.

Why do you need an eyecup?

In bright conditions even a viewfinder can be difficult to use. An eyecup attaches to your viewfinder and stops unwanted light from entering your viewfinder. This makes it easier for you to see the image that you will be taking.

Most eyecups are made of flexible rubber. They can be round, teardrop shaped or rectangular. Round and teardrop shaped eyecups are for normal use, whilst rectangular models are designed for use while you're wearing glasses.
