Macro/Close Up Camera Lenses for Nikon

Macro/Close-up lenses for Nikon cameras for stunning photography

If you want to shoot ultra-close-up images, macro lenses are the ideal camera lens for your Nikon camera. Available in a range of different focal lengths, Nikon macro camera lens zoom in so close that they are often used to photograph small objects, insects and plants, as they capture every detail with no quality loss.

The details

Although you can buy lens extension tubes or a reversing ring adapter that allows you to attach lenses backwards, none have the same magnification and quality of the macro lens. With a smaller field of view, you can capture more detail, contrast more for the perfect picture, focus much nearer to your subject than with a normal lens and fill the frame with your subject.

Depending on what lens you buy changes how close it can zoom and picture your subject. Life-sized zoom is a reproduction ratio of 1:1, meaning you can get even closer and is considered truly macro, which is perfect for imaging insects. Half life-sized, 1:2, and quarter life-sized, 1:4, are still close to the subject but not enough to be considered truly macro, although they can get the job done when imaging flowers, newborn babies and small objects.

Some macro lenses include a vibration reduction system which is especially useful if you photograph at slow shutter speeds and without a tripod. Macro lenses usually have a wider aperture than normal lenses, meaning it has excellent low-light performance.

Focal length

A majority of macro lenses are 100 to 200mm and are capable of 1:1 zoom, with some going as high as 5:1. However, the shorter the focal length, the cheaper and lighter the lens is, making it more portable. Pick the focal length wisely depending on what you want to use it for, as 45 to 64mm lenses are best for product photography whereas 150 to 200mm are best for shooting insects. The longer the focal length, the further away you can be whilst imaging.
