How do you choose the right binocular or telescope?

To find the right optics for you, you need to consider what your application will be. Would you like it to be more portable, or would you like it to have a mounted rig? The overall size of your binoculars will determine if you can hold them steady by hand or if you need the additional support of a tripod or monopod. Balancing your desired magnification, field of view, and portability, you can determine what the best equipment would be for your use.

Can you use binoculars for astronomy?

Binoculars are a great place to start when picking up the hobby of stargazing. You can find a perfect pair of binoculars to fit your specific needs. Using two sets of optics, you will have an increased field of vision and enjoy a clear view of the night sky. Larger, more powerful binoculars can be mounted on a tripod or monopod to give you additional stability. Binoculars are used by beginners and professionals alike to unveil the wonders of the universe.

How do you set up a telescope or binoculars?
  • Set the eyecups - If you do not wear glasses, twist the eyecups to the fully extended position and proceed to the next step. If you wear glasses, begin with the eye cups in their lowered position and slowly move them until you have a full field of view.
  • Set the binocular width - Rotate the body of the binoculars around the central hinge to match your eye width comfortably.
  • Focus - Close your right eye and use the central focus wheel to focus the lens.
  • Set the diopter settings - After focusing with the left eye, if the image is out of focus with both eyes open, use the Diopter settings to fine tune.
What are binocular specs?

There are two main numbers given for each pair of binoculars. The first number represents the magnification. The higher the number the stronger the level of magnification. Each increment measures how many times larger the images are. A magnification of seven would make the image seven times larger than normal. The second number represents the diameter of the lens. This is measured in millimetres. A good handheld binocular for the beginner would have 7-10 magnification and a lens diameter of 50mm. This will provide a great view while still being light enough to handle without a tripod.
