An Introduction to Pioneer CD Recorders

Established in 1938, the Japanese firm "Pioneer" crafts audio and video components and other electronics. One of these product lines is comprised of Pioneer CD recorders or "CD burners" as they’re also called. These devices record audio or data to a compact disc or CD and are available on eBay.

What types of CD recording devices does Pioneer manufacture?

This firm makes both CD-Recordable or CD-R and CD-Rewritable or CD-RW drives and devices. Both types of device can write compact discs, but a CD recordable device can only write to a CD once. A CD rewritable device, one the other hand, lets you write to the same CD repeatedly. This makes the rewritable device useful for data backups since data can get added to the existing CD without erasing the prior information.

How do these devices record information?

Regardless of whether it is audio or computer data, information gets recorded to the compact disc with a laser that etches or burns it to the media. Devices with more than one CD bay also called "drive," can copy one CD to another.

All compact discs whether CD recordable or rewriteable are formed of a polycarbonate substrate, a thin metal coating and topped by a protective seal. On a recordable CD between the metal layers and polycarbonate is a layer of organic polymer dye that functions as the recording medium. Exposure to the laser’s light alters the dye’s composition and permanently transforms it.

What models of Pioneer devices are available?

You can find both vintage models and the Pioneer PDR 609 CD recorder for sale on eBay. The vintage models available include PDR-04, PDR-05, PDR-509, and the 555-RW. The available options include standalone recorders and CD changers that also record.

Use the firm’s latest model the PDR-609 to read and write both CD-R and CD-RW media, letting you burn a CD one time or repeatedly add to one with double-speed finalization. When recording from alternate media sources or an instrument, use the input selector or the talkback input. You can add text and check it on the display, so you can make professional looking CDs that list the number and name of each song recorded. This appears on CD players that offer a display after the burning is complete. This device also provides three mode analogue sync-record. You can use the play exchange, random playback, or 24 step program play with a program check for listing to multiple CDs. The index search helps you find a specific song. The changer/player provides four modes of repeat and variable fade in/out time. It provides five erase modes and synchro recording. Its major hardware features include the following:

  • A Burr-Brown D-A converter to preserve sonic purity
  • One-button record track/disc
  • Auto analogue record with SCMS detection
  • Analogue sync-record w/auto finalization
  • Digital sync-record w/auto finalization
  • 96k/24-bit A/D Conversion Serial Copy Management System
  • 4MB audio buffer
  • FS converter 32k./44.1k/48k/x2.
