Frequently Asked Questions About Sony TV T-Con Boards

The T-Con, or timing control board in LCD TVs, is also known as the controller or control board. The smallest board in all LCD TVs, it controls the electric voltages running through the TV, and it drives the thin film transistor. The T-Con board, like the one made by Sony, is essential for your television to have a clear picture.

What is the T-Con board responsible for?

The small yet powerful T-Con board is responsible for driving the TFT panel. TFT, or thin film transistor, is what gives you a high-quality image in LCD TVs. It drives the TFT through two low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) cables that connect it to the T-Con. This connection is what controls the vertical and horizontal resolution on the television. This board is also responsible for the development of the panel voltages and the backlights. Because the liquid crystal panel does not have the capability to produce light on its own, the T-Con is responsible for creating this light source.

How do you know you need a replacement T-Con board?

One of the most common symptoms of a television that requires a T-Con board replacement is no picture. If your TV has backlights as well as sound but is without a picture, it is most likely due to a T-Con error. Another sign that means you need a different T-Con board happens when there are vertical lines on the entire television screen. A final signal of a T-Con error is when half of the TV screen is without an image, and the other half of the screen is seemingly fine.

Where is the T-Con board located on the television?

The board can be accessed by removing the television from its power source and by taking out the screws on the back. Lift off the back of the television, and place it aside. Your T-Con board can either be centered on the top or located on the bottom edge of the back of the inside television panel. Depending on the make and model of your television, the T-Con board can either be hidden under a metal or plastic cover or out in the open. You will also see the connecting LVDS cables or flat ribbon cables that run from the main board to the T-Con board.

What information do you need before selecting a T-Con board?

When you are sure that you need to replace the T-Con board in your television, make sure you write down the necessary information before ordering. The information you will need is the following:

  • Make of your TV
  • Model number of your TV
  • Serial number of your TV found on the back of the televisio)
  • Manufacturer part number for the board
