Listen like a Master with the Linn LP12 Turntable

Designed by a Scottish company based in Glasgow, the iconic Linn Sondek LP12 turntable has evolved over decades to bring the listener closer to the music. Essentially a buildable and customisable turntable, the Linn LP12 has a long reputation as a reliable piece of audio equipment and is often regarded as the ultimate turntable.

Are complete Linn LP12 models available?

The main idea behind the Linn LP12 turntable is that it can be built up, module by module. Also available on eBay, the individual elements which make up an LP12 enable the music lover to construct their own turntable, with a number of customisable options available. For those who are not certain where to start, it is possible to purchase fully constructed Linn LP12 turntables:

  • The Majik: The basic Linn model, the Majik is a good option for those just getting started with turntables. Its baseboard is solid aluminium and it features an internal motor.
  • The Klimax: Boasting all of Linn’s design innovations, the Klimax can be upgraded with each new component’s release. With a suspended aluminium baseboard, this turntable offers dual speed: 33 and 45 rpm.
  • The Accurate: Designed to get the most from any vinyl record, the Accurate has an external power supply and Krystal cartridge.
Is the Linn LP12 compatible with other components?

Yes. All Linn LP12 models are modular in design, meaning replacement and upgraded components are available. Although some purists will vouch for a Linn-only system, it is possible to use components from other manufacturers with a Linn LP12, such as tonearms and power supplies. Individual unit components are also available on eBay. Remember to check the manufacturer’s site for assembly information.

What design improvements have been made?

Throughout the last decades, the Linn Sondek LP12 has been subject to much design innovation and the release of new components; some of which have limited availability. Notable design changes include the introduction of the Trampolin II baseboard. In contrast to the original MDF baseboard, the Trampolin II is made from aluminium, providing the Sondek LP12 with a solid, rigid base. A further development was the introduction of a new sub-chassis, the Keel, also made from aluminium. This sub-chassis is not part of the standard production, rather a special edition upgrade.
