Apple TV is a micro-console and home media streaming device developed by Apple. The small box is designed to turn your television into an entertainment device. It allows for the streaming and displaying of videos, songs and photos. Using a WiFi connection, the device can be controlled by an Apple Remote, the Apple TV Remote app on an iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad, or Mac computer.
Internet, TV and Media Streamers
The first generation of Apple TV was released in 2007. It was shipped with a 40 GB hard disk and allowed users to access the iTunes store to buy or rent movies and television shows as well as music.
The second and third generation of Apple TV removed the need to sync media on the device, replacing it with streaming instead. There is no internal hard drive - the 8 GB of internal storage is enough for buffering and streaming. These are also the first Apple TV devices that allow the ability to stream media directly from a Mac computer via AirPlay.
The fourth and fifth generations of Apple TV focus more on Apps, such as Netflix, Amazon Video and BBC iPlayer. There are also a number of mini-games that can be downloaded directly to the device. They also ship with a touch remote that allows for much easier browsing than a traditional remote.
Remote Controls
The newer Apple TV remote has touch capability that allows for easy browsing without the use of buttons. The older Apple TV remote controls simply used buttons to browse through apps, videos and television shows. Before buying a remote control, ensure that it's compatible with your specific device.
Cables and Connectors
Dock connectors are ideal for connecting your Apple device to an audio device with ease. The 3.5mm jack supports all iPhones up until the iPhone 7. It is recommended that you check whether the dock connector cable you are buying is compatible with your device.
