Arthur Wood Pottery
Arthur Wood Pottery was produced in Stoke-on-Trent. Initially founded in 1884 as Capper & Wood, in 1928 it changed its name to Arthur Wood & Son.
China Teapots
Arthur Wood is probably most famous for its china teapots and has produced a vast selection in all shapes, sizes and designs. There's plenty to choose from chintzy gilded pots with fancy spouts and handles to their iconic ‘Aladdin's lamp' shaped teapots.
Floral Patterns and Designs
Fans of floral patterns will find plenty of Arthur Wood pieces to choose from. Look out for delicate items in the Sandon pattern or Art Deco pieces produced in the 1920s and 30s. If you prefer porcelain decorated with strong colours and patterns, then the Gaudy Welsh Imari style might suit your taste. The dark blue and bright orange gilded designs are very striking.
Tankards and Mugs
Another popular Arthur Wood collection is the Coaching and Hunting Days series. A ‘treacle glaze' is used to create dark brown and orange pots and tankards with a sturdier look and feel. Mugs decorated with the Back to Front design are more modern. They feature cartoon animals such as pigs, frogs and rabbits and often come with matching teapots, jugs and sugar bowls.
Vases, Jugs and Wall Pockets
Vintage vases and jugs are a great addition to anyone's home. Arthur Wood vases come in a variety of shapes and styles, including brightly coloured Art Deco pieces or retro looking geometric designs from the 1960s and 70s. Wall pockets are vases with three of four separate compartments that hang on the wall, but can often sit on a table or sideboard too.
Moneyboxes and Ornaments
Arthur Wood is famous for its piggy banks. As well as the standard pig shape, look out for moneyboxes shaped like telephones, ducks and cats, among other things. Popular ornaments include Staffordshire spaniel dogs, which generally come in pairs and were designed to sit either side of a fireplace, and jugs shaped like cows, which are known as cow creamers.
