Waterproof Wildlife Digital Cameras
Also known as trap or trail cameras and trophy cams, waterproof wildlife digital cameras are primarily designed for capturing animal and wildlife movement on your land, but they are useful for a number of other reasons.
Trap cameras can be used for general surveillance use and monitoring your property. This could include filming or photographing trespassers or vandals on your land, or capturing evidence of fly tipping and illegal dumping. When using a wildlife digital camera it is important that you only film on land that you own and not towards your neighbours' land or public property.
How wildlife cameras work
Trap cameras strap to things like trees and posts. They come in dark colours or camouflage so they are difficult for people or animals to see.
These cameras have motion and/or heat detectors. When something moves into their field of vision they automatically switch on and begin recording video or taking photos, depending on the make or model of camera that you choose.
Once their field of vision is clear again they switch off, so they only use battery power and memory when there's something to take an image of.
For day or night use
Most trail cameras have infrared functionality so they can record video or take photos at night as well as during the day. In daylight they usually take colour images and at night they switch to night vision and use infrared technology to produce black and white images.
Cameras that can shoot during the day and at night have light detectors that automatically switch from normal to night-vision mode when the natural light around the camera becomes low.
How much battery life do you need?
Battery life is an important consideration if you're investing in a waterproof wildlife camera. Find out how long your camera will function before you'll need to change the batteries.
If you can visit the camera regularly then shorter battery life should be fine, but if visiting the camera regularly isn't an option then opt for one with a longer battery life.
