Play it Back with a Rega Platter

Playing a vital role in ensuring your vinyl is played as accurately as possible, a platter is an important element in any turntable set up. When it comes to high-quality turntables and components, a Rega platter is an essential piece of equipment. Search eBay today for a Rega platter to match your budget and Hi-Fi set up.

Why is the weight of the platter important?

Generally, the heavier the platter, the less interference and vibrations can affect the quality of the record. The platter’s weight will also impact its speed. Whilst light platters can slow down, a heavy platter will maintain its speed once it has reached the desired tempo. Rega platters are made from glass, phenolic resin, or ceramic, depending upon the turntable model. The platter for the Rega RP8, for example, is made from glass, though it's engineered so most of the weight is at the rim of the platter.

Are upgrades and accessories available?

Yes. Whilst only Rega components are recommended with Rega turntables, they are compatible with platters from other manufacturers. Do check the manufacturer’s site for details, though. Platter mats are also available and come in a variety of colours and materials. It is important to test out a variety of materials in order to achieve the effect you are looking for. Some standard materials for platter mats include:

  • Cork: Cork mats work well with glass platters. It’s a natural material and does not stick to the record like fabric or rubber might.
  • Rubber: This is a great option for reducing vibrations on your record.
  • Leather: Mats made from leather can work to either enhance or dampen the sound. It brings out bass tones well, for example.
  • Wool: A great choice for use with a resin platter, the robust fibres in natural wool enhance the coupling with the record.
Is it easy to assemble a Rega platter?

Rega turntables are designed as plug and play devices, and complete packages should be supplied with the user manual. The platter component should already be mounted. If your turntable is new, all you should have to do is remove the protective packaging from beneath the platter. You will then have to adjust the tonearm and its counterweight.
