Audi A6 Estate Cars: Fast, Efficient, and Adaptable

Characteristics of the Audi A6

The A6 model was introduced with the C4 generation of Audi cars (1994 to 1997). The A6 is available as an estate (Avant), or a saloon. The range is available as either petrol or diesel, and the C4 generation is available with engines ranging from 89 to 190 bhp. The Audi A6 S line, also known as the S6, is a higher performance version of the A6, usually only available with petrol engines. For the C4 series, they featured a Bosch Motronic ECU (Electronic Engine Control Unit) on a 2.2-litre engine with up to 227 bhp, or an optional 4.2-litre engine with up to 286 bhp. They also feature the Torsen T-1 Quattro 4-wheel drive, and Quattro is Audi terminology for 4-wheel drive.

Second generation A6 upgrades

Production of the C5 series of Audi cars ran from 1997 to 2004. It featured considerable improvements to the A6 model, most notably upgrades to the design, aerodynamics and engines. The diesel engines range from 109 bhp to 177 bhp, whilst the petrol ones range from 123 bhp to 196 bhp, with the S6 being 335 bhp. Most of the models produced were either a 2.4-L or a 2.6-L V6 (162 to 190 bhp). The Audi A6 automatic featured a 5-speed Tiptronic transmission system. From 1999, the Allroad Quattro was available as an off-road version of the A6 Avant.

What are the features of the C6?

The C6 generation of the Audi A6 range was designed by Satoshi Wada. This generation introduced numerous electronics upgrades, such as the MMI to manage entertainment, GPS, A/C, as well as several driver aids, including adaptive air suspensions. The FSI system was also introduced for the petrol engine, which ranged from a 2.0-litre inline TFSI (up to 168 bhp) to a 4.2-litre V8 FSI (up to 345 bhp), as well as a 5.2-litre V10 FSI (up to 429 bhp) for the S6. In 2005, the A6 won the World Car of the Year award, as well as Practical Caravan’s “Towcar of the Year”. The Audi A6 manual transmission featured a 6-speed Tiptronic system.
