Types of SEAT Leon models

Three generations of SEAT Leon models were sold. Here is a helpful guide to assist you in making a practical decision:

  • First generation: Produced between 1998 and 2005, the SEAT Leon MK1 for sale was offered only as a five-door hatchback. Various models and engine types were offered. The upgraded models used a powerful internal combustion engine and a firmer suspension for stable handling.
  • Second generation: The second generation was launched in 2005. It is easily identifiable by the front headlights that are angular in shape compared to the elongated rectangle headlights of the previous models. The shape and size of the vehicle remained similar to those of the first generation, but five special limited versions were manufactured until the end of production in 2012. A SEAT Leon 2008 for sale is an example of second-generation model.
  • Third generation: This generation continues its run since its launch in 2012. A three-door hatchback and five-door version were introduced in 2013. The generation is known for a roomier inside cabin and additional safety features.
What special editions were introduced in each generation?

There was no special edition in the first generation. 2008 saw the launch of the orange Copa edition that could reach speeds of 254km/h. A similar version, Streetcopa, specifically built for the European market, was introduced at the Geneva Motorshow. The 310 model of the Cupra TDi for sale is yet another special version, equipped with a more powerful engine. Similarly, two variants of León Twin Drive were introduced in 2009. Both these models were powered by a diesel-battery hybrid engine.

The Leon CONNECT model was a special edition introduced in the third generation. Launched in 2015, it was a highly customised model with a range of colours, exterior features, and a futuristic ConnectApp.

Engines used in the SEAT Leon

The first generation of these cars uses petrol and diesel engines. Despite the variety, all petrol models were equipped with inline four-valve DOHC engines. The diesel variants used an eight-valve SOHC engine. The second generation was upgraded with multipoint 16-valve DOHC engines in the petrol version and Pumpe Düse Unit Injector eight-valve or 16-valve diesel engines. Similarly, the third generation uses Fuel Stratified Injection 16-valve engines for petrol-powered cars and 16-valve TDI for diesel-fuelled vehicles.
