Selecting your bowl is a personal experience and it isn't a good idea to choose a bowl just by looking at the weight alone. Bowl Weights
Bowls are made in 2oz increments. You start out at 2lbs and the bowl that you choose will largely depend on the shot that you are trying to make. There are some brands that can supply you with odd weights, including some high-density bowls
Bowl Densities
There are three bowl densities available. They start from low to standard and finally, high. High-density bowls are similar to standard density bowls, however, they are much smaller in size. High-density bowls tend to pull up faster and they can give you an advantage on running greens. Low-density bowls are larger than standard bowls which helps them to run more. They can easily be compared to wooden bowls which are more suited to heavy or slow greens.
The Jack
The standard jack used in all games has a 2 bias. The bowls used will have the same bias as the jack. A popular misconception is that the jack is more weighted on one side, but this is not the case at all.
If you are new to playing bowls then it is a good idea to start out with standard density bowl. A lot of people choose to start out with smaller bowls if they have a physical limitation that stops them from using the larger bowls, however a lot it depends on your own playing style and the type of green you are playing on.
