About Sealskinz Socks

The SealSkinz brand specialises in developing and manufacturing tough, durable clothing for outdoor pursuits and sports, particularly those that take place in extreme conditions. Founded in the 1980s, they have developed products in conjunction with professional skiers, runners, mountaineers and other sports men and women. The development of SealSkinz socks, was inspired by the inventor, John Logie Baird. Baird, when not busy inventing useful things like television, enjoyed walking, particularly in his native Scotland in its beautiful, mountainous regions. Baird suffered from extremely poor circulation, and was greatly affected by the cold weather conditions when he walked. Undeterred, he set out to develop a form of footwear that would protect his feet from the biting cold. His invention, a two-layered sock, the inner layer of which contained a substance called borax, provided the inspiration for all modern walking socks. The borax got rid of the sweat and moisture produced by feet whilst walking, which kept the wearer much drier and more comfortable. This was adapted for military purposes, and many ranges of socks were developed in this way, to help prevent soldiers suffering from trench foot. SealSkinz have taken this original idea, and greatly developed the technology in to the modern socks you see today. The brand launched in Europe in 1999, and by 2002 had sold 10,000 pairs of socks there. Since then, the brand has gone from strength to strength, and produce a wide range of tight-fitting, waterproof socks. Socks come in a range of lengths and sizes, although some are marketed as being designed for a specific activity such as trekking or cycling, the underlying principles and benefits are the same throughout this entire, high-end range of socks.
