Add to your coin collection by finding a rare Victoria Cross 50p. Those lucky enough to have found them in their piggy banks will have found them after 2006 when they went into general circulation.

About the Coin

The Victoria Cross 50 pence was released in 2006 to mark the 150th Anniversary of the original creation of the Victoria Cross medal. On 29th January 1856, Queen Victoria signed the Royal Warrant for the creation of the Victoria Cross medal.

The highest award for gallantry that can be awarded, the Victoria Cross medal was awarded posthumously to those who paid the ultimate price for valour. It is famous for being rewarded to only the most extreme acts of bravery during battle.

The coin itself came in two different designs so you can choose your favourite or try to collect both. One version depicts the Victoria Cross medal with the letters VC as well as 'For Valour' and the date 29 JAN 1856. The second version of the coin shows a soldier carrying an injured comrade on the background of the cross shape. On the back, you'll see the Queen's head with the year 2006.

Condition

Depending on your budget, you'll be able to find coins of different conditions. Some mint condition 50 pence pieces come in presentation packs which depict the medal on the front with the dates 1856 and 2006. These packs include information and history about the medal.

You can also find some VC coins that weren't circulated, which come presented in in air-tight capsules to prevent any wear. The capsules are made from acrylic so that you can see the coin through the protective case.

If you're not fussed about the condition being perfect, look for a coin that has been in circulation and has been used and you'll be able to pick them up from as little as £1, depending on availability at the time.
