Choosing the Right A1 Paper Roll

A1 paper rolls are ideal for wide format printing and plotters, but knowing which roll to choose is crucial because each roll offers drastically different features and benefits. This buying guide will go through the major choices so that you know which is right for you. Be sure to check eBay's long list of paper rolls for a price that fits your budget.

What are the printers that A1 paper rolls work with?

While some A1 paper is made to work with any type of printer, most of them have been specially formulated to work with one type of printer. The three most common printing methods that can be used with this paper are toner, inkjet, and thermal. You cannot use paper made for one printer with another. For example, inkjet paper will not work with a laser printer as the toner will slide right off.

Be sure to get paper that either works with any type of printer or one that works with your specific kind.

What are the different types of A1 paper rolls?

A1 paper comes in various types and each has its own benefits. Some of the most common types of paper that you'll find in this size are:

  • Glossy - This type of paper has a reflective coating on either one or both sides of the paper. You can use this for posters, book covers, flyers, brochures, and anything else that requires a bright cover.
  • Uncoated - Good for printing plans or other standard documents, this can be easily rolled up after printing and it feels like regular paper.
  • Coloured - Some A1 rolls come in bright or pastel colours. If you want your document to be blue, yellow, red, or any other colour, then this is ideal.
  • Recycled - Some or all of the paper comes from post-consumer paper products. This often feels similar to uncoated paper, but it may have a slightly different texture.
How do you choose the right A1 weight of paper?

Weight is a measurement of how thick and dense the paper is. This is measured as grams per square metre or gsm. Standard paper is around 80 to 90gsm. If you want a stiff paper that's somewhat thicker, then consider 130gsm. If you want cardstock that is very thick, then you can get a 160gsm paper. A higher measurement equates to a thicker roll of paper. Since some large format printers cannot work with very thick paper, be sure to check your printer before choosing anything higher than 100gsm.
