Mentadent Toothpastes

Mentadent is a line of dental products manufactured by Unilever and marketed around the world. In the spring of 2017, Church & Dwight stopped selling Mentadent toothpaste in the U.S. and Canada but other markets were not affected. The company sold three varieties of the product in the U.S.: Mentadent P Toothpaste, Mentadent Sensitive Toothpaste, and Mentadent SR Toothpaste.

What are the ingredients in Mentadent?

Sold in 5.25-ounce tubes, Mentadent consists of three main elements: sodium bicarbonate, hydrogen peroxide, and fluoride. The ingredients serve the following functions:

  • Sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, removes surface spots, including those from tea, coffee, and tobacco, and maintains freshness.
  • Hydrogen peroxide helps to remove dark spots and discoloration while also brightening the teeth. It also serves in killing germs within the mouth.
  • Fluoride helps to fight tooth decay by strengthening the enamel of the teeth. It also protects against cavities by making the enamel more resistant to sugar and acidic foods.
What distinguishes Mentadent from other kinds of toothpaste?

Mentadent toothpaste comes with a dual-chamber pump that keeps the active ingredients separate until they're ready to use. When brushing begins, the two ingredients mix and react, resulting in a deeper clean and whiter teeth. Introduced in 1982, the toothpaste has been sold as a subsidiary brand of Arm & Hammer since 2003 until discontinued in the U.S. and Canada in 2017. Most recently, it was packaged with two refills and a free pump. Five types of Mentadent toothpaste are now being sold throughout the rest of the world:

  • Mentadent Replenishing White
  • Mentadent Advanced Whitening
  • Mentadent Advanced Cleaning with Breath Freshening
  • Mentadent Advanced Care
  • Mentadent White System
What are the potential benefits of the Mentadent toothpaste system?

The makers of Mentadent advertise that the toothpaste offers the following results:

  • It whitens the teeth within two weeks.
  • It removes old stains and prevents new ones from forming on the tooth.
  • It protects against cavities.
  • It removes and protects against tartar buildup, which promotes an overall healthy mouth.
  • It whitens beyond two weeks, if continued.
How does Mentadent toothpaste work?

Mentadent toothpaste came up with a new process that allowed the ingredients in their toothpaste to create a chemical reaction throughout the brushing process. The paste is dispensed onto the toothbrush. As the teeth are brushed, the main components react to create oxygenated bubbles. The oxygen bubbles then work in and between the teeth, killing germs, cleaning the teeth and gum line, and whitening the teeth. The company promises whiter teeth with continued use.
