Pokemon Platinum was originally released in 2009 as a follow up to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Of all the Pokemon titles, the game's creators believed that Diamond and Pearl was the most successful, so they wanted to build on this by releasing Pokemon Platinum. The action in Pokemon Platinum is set in the fictional region of Sinnoh, which is based upon the actual Japanese island of Hokkaido. It is the only part of the fictional universe that's permanently covered in snow. This, along with the active snowfall, gives the game a very distinct feeling compared to other Pokemon titles. The starters in Pokemon Platinum are Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. There are also two new characters, Charon and Looker.
