About Build A Bear
Build-A-Bear's first store appeared in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1997. Today they are a cherished brand with over 400 stores worldwide and to date have sold over 70 million bears to children all over the world.
For many, memories of their first Teddy Bear conjure up feelings of warmth, comfort and love, of childhood friendship and trust. Build-A-Bear believe deeply in the power of this very special relationship children have to their cuddly toys. The company's motto is, 'Where Best Friends Are Made'ÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂ. Their huggable mascot Bearamy and his friends Pawlette Coufur, Fashion Advisor to the Furry Famous, and Ted the Tailor, epitomise the world friendship and fun that Build-A-Bear creates.
Maxine Clark, founder of Build-A-Bear says that she was inspired to create the company by a ten year old 'ÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂàKatie. They were out shopping and Katie could not find the bear she wanted, and said, "These are so easy, we could make them." It gave Maxine Clark the idea of creating a world where children could come along and use their imagination to create their very own special bear. Build-A-Bear provides children with a craft and creative experience in which they choose, stuff, name and then dress/style their own personal bear, making selections from a wide range of colourful items of bear clothing and accessories.
Since it started out, the company has blossomed. In 2008, Maxine Clark was named by Chain Store Age as one of The 25 Most Influential People in Retailing. In 2009, Build-A-Bear was awarded a place on the FORTUNE Best Companies to Work for list and is set to continue enriching the lives of children in years to come. The company celebrated its tenth anniversary by building eleven playgrounds in the USA and Canada, and since 1994 has donated over 11 million dollars to child and family charities and causes.
