About Laura Ashley Chair
Welsh designer Laura Ashley started out designing upholstery fabrics in the 1950s. By the '60s she had diversified into clothing design. Her first London shop opened in South Kensington in 1968, and she would become a major figure in fashion in the 1970s. The Laura Ashley look is romantic, rural and harks back to 19th Century England. Quintessential fabric designs featuring intricate floral prints.
Inspired by traditional handicrafts, the first Laura Ashley products were tea towels and headscarves screen-printed by hand in Victorian style designs by Laura herself. By her death in 1985 the name described an internationally respected textile design company. The fashion part of the business has since shrunk considerably, and current owners MUI Asia have shifted the focus back to home furnishing textiles. The range now features everything you need to create the Laura Ashley look for your home, including wallpapers and paints, blinds and rugs.
Laura Ashley chairs come in a range of traditional styles upholstered with Laura Ashley fabrics, which cover the entire range of traditional motifs from florals to stripes to gingham checks. There are also classic leather or distressed wood finishes. Because these chairs are made to order, a vast range of style/ pattern/ colour combinations is available. Chair designs all share a typical nostalgic feel, but this can range from cottage style or Regency look to classic '60s and '70s shapes.
Because of the distinctive style associated with the name Laura Ashley, it may be used to more loosely describe a chair which aspires to create the same air of homely comfort and elegance.
