Buyer Protection - information for sellers

All purchases come with Buyer Protection, giving your buyers even more peace of mind when shopping on eBay. Selling is still free for UK-based private sellers, except for Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles listings.

When UK-based private sellers list items on eBay.co.uk, we now add a Buyer Protection fee to the item price, which is paid by the buyer to eBay (excludes Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles, Classified Ads and Property). The price that buyers see will always include the Buyer Protection fee so there are no surprises at checkout. Listings from business sellers include Buyer Protection - opens in new window or tab at no additional cost to buyers.

      What does Buyer Protection include?

      Buyer Protection includes:

      • 24/7 customer service: Get support around the clock if you need help.
      • Risk monitoring and fraud detection: We actively monitor marketplace activity to identify risk and potential fraud and take action to keep you protected.
      • Secure transactions: All payments are encrypted end-to-end and handled by our trusted payments partners.

You and your buyers still benefit from free leading services like eBay Money Back Guarantee - opens in new window or tab, as well as Authenticity Guarantee - opens in new window or tab (for eligible items and categories).

How is the Buyer Protection fee calculated?

When a UK-based private seller lists an item on eBay.co.uk, we add a Buyer Protection fee to the listing price. This fee is paid by the buyer to eBay. You can review the listing price, the Buyer Protection fee, and the total item price the buyer will see before you complete your listing.

It may take some time to see the Buyer Protection fee reflected in your listing. Typically this delay is only a few minutes but may take up to 24 hours. UK buyers will always see the total item price.

The Buyer Protection fee is calculated as:

      • A flat fee of £0.10 per item, and
      • 7% of the item price up to £20, and
      • 4% of any portion of the item price from £20 to £300, and
      • 2% of any portion of the item price from £300 to £4,000

Any portion of the item price over £4,000 won't incur any additional fee.

If multiple identical items are purchased in the same order, the fixed portion of the fee is only charged once.

If a buyer bids on an auction or makes an offer on a listing, the Buyer Protection fee is included in their auction or offer amount, so they know exactly how much they'll pay if they win the auction or if their offer is accepted. The seller sees the auction or offer price without the fee, so they know exactly how much they'll receive. As the Buyer Protection fee is variable, the fee amount that the buyer actually pays is calculated as part of the final auction selling price.

When a buyer sends a counteroffer, you'll see the buyer's price breakdown, including the amount you'll receive and the Buyer Protection fee paid to eBay, so you'll have all the information you need to accept or decline the counteroffer.

      Refunds

When you refund the buyer in full for a return or for an item that didn't arrive, we'll also refund the full Buyer Protection fee that was paid by the buyer to eBay.

If you send a partial refund to the buyer, we'll provide a prorated refund of the Buyer Protection fee to the buyer. For example, if you refund 50% of the item price, we'll refund 50% of the Buyer Protection fee back to the buyer.

      Frequently asked questions

Is selling still free for UK-based private sellers?

Yes! UK-based private sellers pay no transaction fees for all categories, except Vehicles, and receive 300 free listings per month. The Buyer Protection fee is paid by the buyer to eBay. So if you list an item for £10, you'll receive £10 when the item sells.

Who pays the Buyer Protection fee?

The Buyer Protection fee is paid by the buyer to eBay on UK-based private seller listings. We recently changed our fee structure, so it's free for private sellers to sell, meaning there are no barriers for these sellers to list the items buyers love.

Where do I see the Buyer Protection fee in my listings?

When you list an item, you'll see the Buyer Protection fee amount added to your listing price. You can also view the fee amount from your Active listings.

I'm a business seller. What does this mean for me?

As a business seller, Buyer Protection is added at no extra charge to you or your buyers. There's nothing you need to do to access this protection for your buyers.
