As well as helping you comply with EU regulations, displaying energy efficiency labelling on your listings helps buyers make an informed buying decision by providing them with clear information about how energy efficient a product is.
Tip
For a complete list of product groups which require energy labelling, go to the European Commission Energy-efficient Products - opens in new window or tab site.
Keep in mind these rules apply to items you sell in the EU, UK, and Switzerland, regardless of the registration country on your eBay account. However, for smartphones and tablets, the requirement doesn't apply to listings aimed at buyers in the UK, except for those in Northern Ireland, where the rules are in effect.
Products covered by energy efficiency labelling regulations must display the following information:
- Energy efficiency range (EC range): the scale of energy efficiency classes, for example, A-G
- Energy efficiency rating: the energy efficiency class assigned to your product
- Energy label and EU tyre label: the label that presents your product’s energy efficiency and performance
- Product information sheet: the document that includes technical information about the product’s energy performance and other relevant features
There are two ways to add this information to each of your listings - manually, following our sections below for electrical products or tyres, or by adding the EPREL Registration Number. As EPREL is a European database, this only applies to listings for buyers in the EU and Switzerland, and does not apply to UK-only listings.
While both options allow you to comply with regulations, providing the information manually gives you better control over the information displayed.
Energy efficiency labelling for electrical products
To get started adding the energy efficiency labelling to your listings, you'll need to create or revise your listing as usual in the advanced listing tool.
If you need to display the energy efficiency labelling for electrical appliances and products, including smartphones and tablets, first you'll need to add the energy efficiency rating and the EC range. Here's how to add this information in Item specifics:
- Go to Additional item specifics.
- Select the Energy efficiency rating dropdown and choose the value that matches your product.
- To add the EC range, choose a value from the EC range dropdown.
Once you've added the item specifics, you can upload the energy efficiency label and product information sheet. Here's how:
- Scroll down to the Item disclosures section.
- Select Show more and select the toggle next to Add energy efficiency documentation.
- Upload the image for both the energy efficiency label and the product information sheet.
- Once uploaded, you can select the pencil icon to add optional text for buyers with special access needs
At the moment, it’s not possible to add energy efficiency labelling for multiple products or product variants that require different energy efficiency labelling. If you're creating listings that include multiple products or product variants, you'll need to create single listings for each one. This allows you to add the correct energy efficiency information for each product.
EU tyre labelling
If you're selling new class C1, C2 or C3 tyres, you may be legally required to display an EU tyre label and product information sheet in your listings. This information provides buyers with important details about the performance of the tyre in relation to fuel efficiency, safety and noise.
Here's how to add the information:
- Scroll down to the Item disclosures section.
- Select Show more and select the toggle next to Add energy efficiency documentation.
- Upload the image for both the EU tyre label and the product information sheet.
- Once uploaded, you can select the pencil icon to add optional text for buyers with special access needs
For more information about energy labelling for tyres, visit the European Commission - opens in new window or tab website.
Tip
Images need to be in either .jpeg, .png, .bmp, .gif, or .tif format and should be at least 500 pixels on the longest side. If your energy efficiency label and product information sheet are in PDF format, you'll need to convert it using a PDF converter tool.
Where to find the energy documentation
You can find the energy efficiency labels and product information sheets for your products in a number of ways:
- Visit the manufacturer's website
- Search for the product on the EPREL - European Product Registry for Energy Labelling - opens in new window or tab site
- Ask your supplier
- Scan the QR code of the energy label or EU tyre label (if applicable) that's printed on the product, packaging or documentation. The QR code will direct you to the EPREL site, where you can download the energy or EU tyre label and product information sheet
EPREL Registration Number
Alternatively, business sellers can display energy efficiency and performance information to buyers in the EU and Switzerland by adding the correct EPREL Registration Number to their listings. Every product model in the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling - opens in new window or tab (EPREL) has its own unique EPREL Registration Number.
You can find the EPREL Registration Number in one of the following ways:
- Check your product documents
- Check the product information sheet for the EPREL Registration Number
- You can scan the QR code on the energy label or EU tyre label if it’s available. The EPREL Registration Number is embedded within the URL of the QR code
- Search for the product model on the EPREL - opens in new window or tab website
- Check with your supplier or manufacturer
- They’ll provide the EPREL Registration Number if you don’t have a product sheet and label
- Suppliers or manufacturers are required to register and publish the product details in the EPREL database if needed
Here’s how to ensure the relevant information is displayed:
- Go to the advanced listing tool and select Additional item specifics.
- Go to the Additional (optional) section.
- Enter the correct EPREL Registration Number for your product in the EPREL Registration Number field.
- The EPREL Registration Number can only have 19 digits or fewer, with no letters, spaces, or special characters
When you add the EPREL Registration Number to a listing, eBay receives the respective energy efficiency and performance information from the EPREL database and automatically adds it to your listing. Sellers are responsible for ensuring the displayed information is accurate and matches the actual product.
Tip
If you've added the Manufacturer Part Number (MPN) or European Article Number (EAN) and the brand to your item specifics, the energy labelling information may still be added to your listing, if we can retrieve the information from the EPREL database. Once it’s published, check the information in the listing to make sure it’s correct.
How energy efficiency and performance information is added to your listings
The energy efficiency and performance information in your listings can come from different sources.
Here’s how the energy efficiency and performance information is added:
- If you’ve added the complete energy efficiency and performance information, we show this as a first preference
- If this isn’t available, we use information from EPREL, based on the EPREL Registration Number you provide
- If no EPREL Registration Number is provided, we try to retrieve the information from EPREL using product identifiers such as the MPN, EAN, or brand
- If no information is available from EPREL, we show the information you provided, even if it’s incomplete
How to opt out
If you don’t want energy efficiency and performance information from EPREL to appear in your listings, you can opt out. Here’s how:
- Go to Account settings - opens in new window or tab and select Selling preferences.
- In All listings and order, select Edit next to EU energy efficiency and performance information.
- Disable the Display EPREL energy efficiency information toggle.
- This means we won’t add EPREL-sourced energy efficiency and performance information to any of your listings.
Energy efficiency labelling rescaling
The energy efficiency labelling for certain product categories is being revised. The current energy labels with an energy efficiency range above A, such as A+ to D, are gradually being replaced with a uniform range, from A to G.
As a seller, you're required to update your product listings with the new energy efficiency labelling. To keep up to date with new energy labelling related to rescaling, see your product page on the European Commission - opens in new window or tab website.
