This is a very and readable authorised biography of A.W. Wainwright’s life. It’s comprehensive, illuminating and a jolly good read. Perhaps it includes more excerpts from Wainwright’s letters in it than is ideal, but upon discovering such a treasure trove of letters that reveals so much of the man, it’s very understandable that Hunter Davies felt impelled to use so much of it (Indeed he later followed up this biography with a whole book containing Wainwright’s correspondence). I’m not sure Alfred Wainwright comes across as a particularly nice chap, particularly in his youth, but I did warm very much to his older curmudgeonly self of later years, and of course, one can only admire his incredible work as writer, artist and guide. There is no doubt he was a genius of a kind and his 7 pictorial books of the Lake District, his Pennine Way Walk guide, and the super Coast to Coast Walk he designed (and subsequent book) are a grand legacy and gift to the Walkers of our nation. This biography adds much to our knowledge of this quiet, inspired but retiring man. It’s an all encompassing book written with much skill, understanding and sensitivity by Hunter Davies. I am sure most Wainwright fans will welcome and enjoy it. I did, but I would also recommend that you read Wainwright’s wonderful autobiography, Memoirs of a Fell Walker too. It’s a lovely book that I have happily read and returned to on many occasions over the years.Read full review
