Il padiglione sulle dune è innanzitutto la storia di una misantropia: una misantropia giovanile, fatta d'autosufficienza e selvatichezza, che in un giovane vuol dire soprattutto misoginia, e che spinge il protagonista a cavalcare solo per le brughiere della Scozia, dormendo sotto la tenda e nutrendosi di porridge. Ma la solitudine di un misantropo non apre molte possibilità narrative: il racconto nasce dal fatto che i giovani misantropi sono due, che si nascondono entrambi, l'uno spiando l'altro, in un paesaggio che di per sé evoca la solitudine. Dalle dune desolate delle coste scozzesi non può nascere altra storia che di gente che si nasconde e spia. Il testo si rifà all'edizione del 1882. La prima pubblicazione, sul "Cornhill Magazine", è del 1880.
