I recently had the misfortune of a small metallic object fall into the mixer (Kitchenaid 7QT) while it was operating. This caused the transmission to fail. Upon examination a pinion gear had sheared and two cyclic gears had teeth stripped. The replacement parts would have been over 50% of the cost of the complete motor and transmission unit, so that's what I went for as there is always the risk of putting new parts in the old transmission and another failure later on.
