About this product

Product Information

The Arena Eternal was constructed by the mysterious Vadrigar, the enigmatic Arena Masters, far in the past. The arena was designed to satisfy the Vadrigar's insatiable hunger for carnage and battle. Now you, as a gladiator, must enter battle against the most powerful warriors in history who populate the Arena Eternal. More than 30 types of opponents, each with but a single thought -- survival -- awaits your appearance!

Within the arena, there is only one rule: kill or be killed. Fortunately, the Vadrigar, unwilling to accept death as a way out of combat, ensure that anyone who dies is immediately resurrected and thrust back into the fray. You must climb the ranks, winning your battles against increasingly powerful foes.

During gameplay, you have a wide variety of weapons from which to choose including several types of guns (machinegun, shotgun, plasma, lightning, rail and BFG), rocket and grenade launchers and bladed weapons. Three kinds of armor can be utilized, each uniquely affecting your armor rating, while more than a half-dozen power-ups dot the arena, providing enhanced combat abilities ranging from invisibility to flight.

Med-kits, personal teleporters, health bonuses and earned medals that count toward final battle score totals round out the many features of Quake III Arena. Single- as well as multiplayer action is offered, although the game is designed for multiplayer contests first and foremost. In single-player mode, the challenge is to defeat automated computer-controlled opponents at each level in order to "unlock" tougher levels.

During multiplayer action, five specific game types are available including all, free-for-all, tournament, team deathmatch and capture the flag. Many options allow full customization of multiplayer games and feature control over aspects such as 'bot skill levels, frag, capture and time limits, connection to dedicated servers, player list designation and friendly fire rules.

Other features in Quake III Arena include unique environmental hazards, properties, and items including fog of death, acceleration and bounce pads, gates, doors, lava, elevators and lifts, voids, water, pendulums, platforms and more. Twenty-six arena maps replete with traps, secrets, lighting nuances and varied surfaces await the intrepid warrior. Four additional capture the flag maps are available for practicing skills against other opponents.

    Good Old Times

Having played this as a teenager in the 90s, it was very refreshing to go back and play it again 16 years later. The graphics are still good for their obvious age. And it's as challenging now as it was then. After a couple console tweaks (custom width/height/ratio) to get proper 1080p out of it, and making sure vync was on, it was a great play. Be warned, most discs come with an outdated version. Be sure to get the 1.32 point release patch for it. It will among other things, remove the need to keep the cd in while playing the game.

  • Quake III: Arena PC Game

Some have heard of it, others have not. I think of it as the computer version of Halo. It's basically the same concept; to kill the opponent using weapons around you and certain "stunts" that keep you from being fragged. One of the biggest virtues to keep in mind is to "Frag everything that isn't you". There are 2 different ways of installing the full version via CD - full install (roughly 520MB) or short install where you have to pop in the CD every time you want to play (roughly 50MB). I STRONGLY recommend the full install, that is of course if you can spare the hefty amount of space on your computer, if not and you don't mind keeping the CD handy, then go for the short install method. The demo version can be found at a lot of places on the net, but you only get 4 different arenas to ...

  • Classic PC 3D-shooter game: classic realism

This 3D shooter games in its earlier versions offered outstanding three dimensional sound support for the Aureal 3D family of Vortex 2 sound cards. I could have bought a more up to date version, but wanted the outstanding sound quality produced over 4 channel stereo with Aureal. Unfortunately, Sound Blaster bought out the Aureal 3D company and development in general halted for the Vortex 2 sound chips. But when you click on the Aureal 3d option in the system settings of Quake 3D Arena, the 3D sound kicks in. You feel like you're surrounded by alien monsters as you fight your way to come out on top in the 3D arena competition. Recent updates have neglected to add support for the Aureal 3d surround sound chip. And the experience just isn't the same.

  • Great retro game FPS!

I love this game a lot. Highly recommended for all retro gaming collectors!

  • Quake III, Still A Great Game

Pros: Excellent game design Compatible for Windows 7 64-bit Great graphics Doesn't require much system resources Cons: None that I can think of Other Thoughts: This game engine was used in Star Trek Voyager Elite Force which really made everything turn out like it was supposed to. Overall a good game, better than Quake 4 in my opinion of course feel free to disagree.
