About this product

Product Information

Director Matthew Vaughn (LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS) takes his experience with credible crime capers and applies it to the fantasy genre in this charming but not too precious adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel. The many threads of the story intertwine seamlessly, unfolding at an unforced pace that complements the movie's magical special effects. Charlie Cox (CASANOVA) stars as Tristan, a somewhat bumbling shopkeeperÆs assistant in the sleepy English village of Wall, so named for the stone barrier that separates it from the magical realm of Stormhold. Tristan is in love with the beautiful, dismissive Victoria (Sienna Miller), who much prefers her other suitor, Humphrey (Henry Cavill), since he has travelled all the way to Ipswich to buy her an engagement ring. Tristan, in a last-ditch effort to win Victoria's affections, offers to bring her a fallen star they've just seen, and she agrees to marry him if he can deliver. Unbeknownst to Tristan, he is the product of his father's (Nathaniel Parker) sole excursion to Stormhold, where he had a tryst with a mysterious slave girl (Kate Magowan) who said she was a princess. As Tristan retraces his fatherÆs steps he discovers that the 'star' is actually a beautiful young woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). A trio of witches, led by a delightfully wicked Michelle Pfeiffer, wants to capture Yvaine to cut out her heart and gain eternal youth, while the three remaining sons of the recently deceased king (Peter O'Toole) compete with one another to find the gem Yvaine wears around her neck. With special effects that never outshine the performances and a sweet story peppered with hints of Gaiman's dark sensibility, STARDUST is a truly enchanting fairy tale.

Reviews
Ultimate DVD - So full of unselfconscious fun and adventure that you can't help but be swept up by its charms, Los Angeles Times - Sophisticated in its execution, it is a movie that possesses a child's whimsical sense of wonder that propels the action, coupled with an adult sensibility that gives it emotional heft, Box Office - A refreshingly funny fairytale... The charming Danes shines brightest here, Uncut - A steady stream of star cameos buoy the narrative and Gaiman's source material is well served by the script writers, Total Film - An uneven but entertaining romp, Sight And Sound - Lush and whimsical... Brimming with charm and CGI and full to bursting with Proppian folktale staples, Empire - Pfeiffer and Strong ensure the story boasts some great bad guys, and Vaughn certainly knows how to make it all look great, Entertainment Weekly - STARDUST is a beguiling pastiche of storybook magic... It's the closest the movies have come in a while to the nudgy, knowing fairy-tale enchantment of THE PRINCESS BRIDE

  • Stardust - Brilliant!

I was working too hard to take time out to see this at the cinema last year so when I saw the DVD for sale on EBay I kept bidding until I got it - and yes it was well worth my time... In fact I would say it was worth buying and watching just to see Michelle Pfeiffer's character aging - all of a sudden her bust just sags (Terrifying!!). Robert De Niro's character is brilliant too. Wall is a village in Victorian England bordered by a wall - the wall is guarded 24 hours a day but once or twice someone has managed to trick their way past the guard.. Our hero, Tristan, is the result of one such passage, his father in England and his Mother the slave of a witch in the magical kingdom of Stormhold on the other side - he is determined to win the hand of the lovely Victoria and to do so sets off ...

  • Entertainment at the touch of a button

I actually bought this DVD because I had seen the video for Take That's "Rule the World" and thought the film it was showing looked good - and it was.I went on the computer to find out which film it was for and then sent for the DVD.It was a brilliant fantasy story that was watchable all the way through. Loads of action,a really different story, witchcraft and funny incidents came to a acceptable conclusion - yu weren't really sure what would happen till the end. It's the kind of film you could watch again.Recommended for anyone who wants a good film. Claire Danes made a good heroine(I thought it was Gwynneth Paltrow at first as did someone else I know who has seen this film).I liked Claire better.

  • Stardust

A great family film. I would recommend this film to all. An epic fairy tale in hope of wooing a beautiful girl, Tristan who is played by Charlie Cox promises to bring her a falling star, but hes in for the adventure of his life when he discovers the star is actually a beautiful girl named Yvaine played by Claire Danes. When an old witch Lamia who is played by Michelle Pfeiffer attempts to steal the stars Yvaines youth. Tristen must protect her at all costs. Also staring in this film Robert De Nero, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais and Peter O'Toole

  • You will cry or it will make you

Five Big bright stars NO DOUBTS I saw this at the cinema recently- what a terrific film! Read the novel years ago, heard it was coming out as a movie... waited patiently... Exceeded ANY expectations! Bought the Soundtrack, and the Take That single "Rule the World" - get 'warm fuzzies' every time I hear the song... cried my eyes out at the film :) Can't wait for the DVD... A real 'feelgood film'!
