    Great Lens in Daylight

Canon's L series of lenses are famous for their build quality and this one is no exception. There are many Youtube videos and online in-depth reviews on this lens, so I'll skip the standard details. I wanted this to photograph junior rugby games where I was standing on the side line. My existing 24-70mm Canon lens was doing a great job, but I had to do a lot of cropping when they were on the other side of the pitch. With this 70-300mm lens, I have to be careful I don't zoom in too close & lose some of the picture, no cropping needed to get those close-up shots. It's not too heavy for me, but I have invested in a monopod to remove all the burden when standing around for an hour clicking away. The max aperture setting of f/4 doesn't bother me since I'm shooting in daylight. The bokeh ...

  • Superb quality lens and well worth the extra money.

I've had this lens for a couple of months now and have taken over 1000 shots with it. The sharpness of the images captured is incredible and allows severe cropping whilst still achieving a crisp picture. Autofocus is fast and the manual override is useful. Image stabilistation is effective. The build quality is superb and I have no fears using this lens in the field (or off the back of a small, bouncing, shark-diving boat). The focal range range makes this suitable for a wide variety of shots and I have no issues with the quality at any focal length. Obviously there is a compromise compared to prime lenses but you have an excellent and convenient package. The lens is heavy on paper (1kg) but I have not found any issue carrying it around all day with no support. In fact I've yet to ...

  • Great lens and size

I have had canon gear for many years. Was looking for a zoom lens in the range 70 - 400 had a 100-400 "L" before Mk1 type and found it excellent but heavy. Decide to try this mid-zoom at 70-300"L" and it's great. Smooth to operate, fast focus and quiet is great for low light and not heavy to hand hold. In fact I use it on a 7D and 1D II "N" works great on both bodies. Sharp and clear would recommend as an all rounder not as specialised as the 100-400 but it's not the same zoom range but at 70-300 it covers the range for the majority of day to day use.

  • Excellent lens.

As new showed no distinguishing marks on the body , no artefacts on lens surface, no signs of fungus etc. All movement was smooth and reading from lens was accurate and results were sharply focussed. An excellent lens with an industrial build, not light but designed to survive.

  • L series Canon 70-300

Bought this to replace the Canon non-L series version which I did not get on with - the electronic "manual" focusing drove me mad! This is so much nicer to use, controls are smooth & nicely weighted and auto focusing is quick and accurate, Being a metal bodied lens it is quite heavy but I am willing to put up with that.
