Synopsis
Steeped in musical influence, racial dynamics, and culinary significance, the Ninth Ward has distinguished itself as one of New Orleans' most influential communities. Extensively researched and carefully recorded, this new oral record features unique interviews with generations of residents. Each source honestly evaluates discrimination, neighbors, poverty, and faith, delivering heartfelt and often harrowing insight into what it means to be from the Ninth Ward. Each chapter chronicles one of the metaphorical and actual storms the area has weathered and is seamlessly woven into a comprehensive record by people who know the Ninth Ward best. A specialist in Ninth Ward history and a New Orleans native, Caroline Gerdes is a freelance journalist who frequently publishes in the Huffington Post and other national platforms. The Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA) and the New Orleans Times-Picayune have interviewed her as a regional oral historian, and she is also a Women's Media Center SheSource expert. Gerdes received a grant from the National Geographic Society to preserve the history of the Ninth Ward through an oral history project, which she has now adapted into this book., Steeped in musical influence, racial dynamics, and culinary significance, the Ninth Ward has distinguished itself as one of New Orleans' most influential communities--so why is its history so often overlooked? While many have heard of Ruby Bridges, most don't know about the McDonogh Three, who desegregated another Ninth Ward school on the same day. And when Hurricane Katrina threatened to displace its notable musicians, the Ninth Ward provided sanctuary with its modern Musicians' Village. Extensively researched and carefully recorded, An Oral History of the New Orleans Ninth Wardfeatures substantial, unique interviews with generations of residents to preserve the history of the district. Each source honestly evaluates discrimination, neighbors, poverty, and faith, delivering heartfelt and often harrowing insight into what it means to be from the Ninth Ward. Readers will explore the community's changing population, from its inception as an immigrant borough that welcomed a majority African American community--and the stigmas it faced for doing so--to the encroaching gentrification by the hipster population. With each chapter chronicling one of the metaphorical and actual storms the area has weathered, this volume is a comprehensive record of history and folklore from the people who know the Ninth Ward best.

- a***m (207)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchasegreat price for a well known New Mexican folk carver. Took 2 weeks to receive my purchase but it was the USPS fault. They bounced it from major city to city and the Phoenix distribution center sent it out of state twice after they received it rather than sending it to my local PO. But the wait was well worth it. Had to have the USPS track it down before receiving it. If the seller has any more carvings by New Mexican carvers at this price, I will buy again.Folk Art Carved Wooden Sculpture New Mexico Artist Signed Hector Rascon Woodsman (#125799749903)
