I have been gardening for over 50 years and this is without reservation the best book on gardening that you will ever find. The knowledge of gardening is going by the wayside, and if you care about your children and grandchildren you should buy them a copy of this book ASAP. It is written in easy to understand 'plain english' along with 'how to do it photos' showing how to do it step by step. I have eight copies of this book right now that I am giving as CHRISTmas gifts this year. It is simply the best book on gardening and gardening tips that you can find, and it is very reasonably priced. I know Dick Ramond's JOY OF GARDENING suggestions will lead to a success garden because I have used many of the same methods over the years--and I always have many extra vegetables to give away every year. But I did learn a lot. Having said that there are many newer books out there that do have the bulk of the same information, plus of course more up-to-date and useful tips. However if I had to do it again I would buy it again if for nothing else the easy tips on watering, keeping out pests and what I call the buddy system of planting described in the book.....what plants grow great along side others in the same bed.

I Saw my neighbors book, ordered one for my self. I was really interested in the book called the Joy of Gardening. The more I read the more I love the book. The idea of making the rows wide and planting radishes with everything planted made a lot of sence. I didn't know that radishes kept pests away from the plants and when pulled the hole allows water go into the ground and hold moisture. I have decided to plant my garden according to the book. I haven't read the entire book yet but before planting time I will have. Everyone that I tell about "Joy of Gardening", they want one of their own.
This book is written by a gardener who has experimented with his own gardening and has asked for answers from others. The books writer lived in Vermont which is a season #4 gardening area. And the ideas that are talked about work. Because of the short growing season in region #4 the ideas that he talks about help a gardener produce longer growing and more plentiful crops. The ideas also decrease the amount of work a gardener has to do.
