I saw the 1978 remake of this movie when I was a kid (at the theatre), and loved it. Very suspenseful, and gave you that "hopeless" feeling that you were doomed. I recently purchased the 1978 version and have watched it repeatedly. So, I decided to buy the original version, which I had never seen before, and was a little disappointed. You could hardly tell the human "clones" were clones! The first clone shown in the movie was someone's uncle. The niece claimed he had "no feelings, no emotions", but when the doctor went to see him he was smiling and smoking a pipe. They didn't really show that much of the "clones" and most of that part of the movie was implied. In the 1978 remake, they relied much more heavily on showing the clones and their activities, which made it much more easier to believe that something evil was really happening. It made it seem like a much more hopeless situation for the surviving humans. The music was also much better in the 1978 version. They also showed very little of the "pods" that took over your body. In the 1978 remake, they were all over, and when you saw one next to a body, you knew it was going to take that person over! It wasn't a bad movie, just not that great ...Read full review
My recent purchase, on ebay, of the 1950's movie INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS was rewarding. The DVD arrived quickly and well packaged and was in very nice condition, too. I have yet to be disappointed in ANY item I've ever purchased on ebay ! This movie was one of the best Sci-Fi movies of the 1950's. Actor Keven McCarthy leads a fit cast in this great story about an alien intrusion into our society. This movie is considered by many to be one of the top ten SCI-FI "flicks" of all time, in spite of it's age ! I have loved it ever since I first saw it in a movie theater in the 1950's. I've had it in my video tape collection, reformatted for TV screen, for years but it is so much better on DVD with the full screen view letterboxed so that I now see everything that the movie house viewers saw so long ago ! Excellent movie !! Excellent purchase !!Read full review
Very good. And frightening! I'm an old woman and I first saw the movie at the cinema where me and two of my cousins walked to in Dallas. On the way back I was looking all around for a "pod" person to grab me, that's how much the movie affected me. I watched the updated version with Sutherland, et al., and while I enjoyed parts of it I don't think it can compare to the original. I went through all my old VHS tapes recently and threw out about 3 dozen plus the Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I wanted the DVD of it and ordered this one.

Good movie but wish it was the original.

A great sci-fi classic that has been remade a couple of times already. This one is the original and even if you watch the remakes this one deserves to be seen. There is something creepy about old back and white movies anyway (at least to me) that make horror movies more effective. I think it is the lack of special effects and relying more on mood, music and script. Emotionless shells are replacing the citizens of a California town. At first the town doc puts it down as paranoia - but is it paranoia when they're really after you? Plant-like pods enclose copies of the citizens and the duplicates kill the originals when they sleep. The doc and a small group of citizens decide to leave town and warn the world but they are too late. This film has been seen as an allegory of communism and even as criticism for the US government at the time. Whatever people saw or want to see under the surface of the movie is just another artistic layer of this great sci-fi movie. The first one to make you scared to fall asleep - take that Freddy!Read full review
