XP 2500+ Barton
If you have a socket A system you want to upgrade and it can take a 333 or 400Mhz FSB and you have, or are willing to fit DDR 2700 or 3200 memory, the 2500+ Barton is quite possibly the best of the XP+ breed in terms of bangs per buck. The faster Thoroughbred B's and Thorntons may have been faster in MHz, but had smaller L2 caches. The 3200+ sold at quite a premium when it was new and it still does now. The 3200+ also tends to run far hotter, meaning more elaborate cooling solutions or simply faster fans shifting more air are needed. This tends to make for a noisier system. The particular processor I just bought was a typical example, no bent pins and no chipped corners on the processor die - both very common with all Athlon XP's due to the extreme pressure of the heatsink mounts ... The particular processor I just bought was a typical example, no bent pins and no chipped corners on the processor die - both very common with all Athlon XP's due to the extreme pressure of the heatsink mounts specified by AMD and the fact that the processor die is exposed and not covered in a metal plate like more recent designs. Again, as with most secondhand Athlons there was FAR FAR too much thermal grease on the top. Even with the correct solvents it took me over 30minutes to get the old gunk off and have a clean chip to work with. The theory of such thermal compounds is that they fill the minor imperfections in the surfaces of the metal-metal joins. Hard-core over-clockers sometimes 'lap' the bases of their heatsinks (polish them to a fine mirror finish) for this purpose - to aid conductivity. Arctic Silver have some excellent guides to correct technique on their site - easily googled. Far too much is usually applied in error, and in such large quantities can actually hinder cooling! Having applied a very thin film of my preferred AS product 'Ceramique' to the processor die and wiped a small amount onto the base of my heatink and polished it off with a lint-free cloth, I (re)assembled my system. I currently have an Abit NF7-S2 motherboard, 2 GB of Samsung DDR2700, an old cheap generic beige box that doesn't have particularly good thermal properties and a nasty nasty Qtec 450 'power supply'. The Qtec is next on my list of things to throw away, by the way. A decent, stable PSU is the foundation of any good PC. The system has been running rock solid now for eight hours since the new processor went in, during which time it's done some heavy work in Photoshop and Painter, and crunched quite a lot of video. And it's been quite warm today. Over this period, MBM5 tells me that my average CPU temp has been 49C and average case temp 31C. I'm perfectly happy with this. Anything up to mid-50's can be considered 'normal' for an Athlon XP. The chips are rated upto 85-95C depending on model, and in practice will usually survive going beyond this briefly, but may need to sit overnight before they'll POST again! You frequently see people these days complaining that 45+C is far too hot for a CPU. Maybe for a modern part it is, but to get an Athlon much cooler you'll need to spend a lot of money doing it, and unless you're going for a big overclock with every other important part also shiny and wonderful, it's a waste of time and money. My final verdict? Well worth while upgrade - cheap shot in the arm for an aging system. For those inclined to overclock, the XP2500+ is probably the best choice other than the XP-M2500+ (lower power=less heat). If you have PC3200 in there, simply set an FSB of 400 and you have an instant XP3200+. I've yet to see a 2500+ that won't stand this at a minimum with no detriment whatsoever...

I have allways wanted one of these Athlon 2500 Xp Barton Core Processors, since they came out, as there was much advertising at the time about how the extra built in Memory Cache would help to speed up certain calculations that a CPU has to perform. As with most Computers, as today, this was based on the capability of the machine at being able to play games, although of course, having a good Graphics Card is equally important. However, as with all things, it depends what Computer is going to be used for. I bought my Athlon 2500 recently, as I was building an "In-expensive" Computer, just to use for Internet Surfing, Word Pro, Recording/Storing Music/Photos etc, as I am not really interested in games, so thought this would be the ideal processor, as the extra Cache helps with general ... Ended up spending more than intended on the various parts, as the Motherboard I bought, ended up faulty, but have bought a "New" Asrock K7SGX1 from RL Supplies and added 1GB of RAM plus this CPU and I am happy with the performance. As I have built what might be considered to be an "Obselete" System, I was not worried about any Games performance, as modern machines tend to need more and more Computing/Graphics power anyway, but with my 7300GT AGP Card in place, teamed up with the 2500 Athlon, enables me to play some of the older titles, but again, as with all computers, it depends on what you are going to use them for, as they are a "Tool" and therefore should be used as such. I will try doing some Photo restoring and Video Editing with this setup, as the Extra Cache may help with the processing of large, complex files, but to be honest, I have no intention of Overclocking the CPU to gain any extra horsepower out of it, as I would rather have a stable reliable machine, to do my bits and pieces on and to be honest, I dont think there would be anything on a modern machine, that would be of benefit to me, at the moment, save perhaps more processing power for certain software titles, although to be honest, apart from games, I dont think there would be too many demands on my System. I havent looked at the System requirements recently, for up to date "Multimedia" Software titles, but can probably hazzard a guess, that even a machine of 3-4 years old, can probably handle it ok. I notice that a lot of Charities, that take in Old Computers, have specified a minimum requirement of a Pentium 3 750MHZ CPU, as something that would be capable of doing something worth while, so my "elderly" machine is a positive "Rocket" and more than capable of doing what I need. So all in all, if you cannot afford an Athlon 3200 XP CPU, as the prices have rocketed and dont have SEmpron support on your Sockety A Motherboard (Mine does) then why not try a Barton Core 2500XP? Saying that, if you have "Mobile" support on your MOBO, then some of the Mobile 1500 XP CPUs have great Overclocking potential, for a cheap outlay, but as I said earlier, I am more than happy with the 2500 Athlon, as it does what it says on the Tin! Doesnt get too hot either, around 42C most of the time, although I am not going to put it through a "Burn" test, although it will be fine. I paid £25.00 for it and the Guy even delivered it to me at work, as he lived nearby! So very pleased with my purchase and do not have any intention of upgrading my computer, for quite a while yet. PS, the Woolwich Building Society were still using 386 Computers till 1998, as I asked!

I decided to buy , because I already have one in another machine and have been very very pleased with it performance. The XP 2500+ Barton is indeed an power house , and coupled with a good Nforce II mainboard can be unleashed , simply by raising the FSB from 333Mhz to 400Mhz thus giving you a XP 3200+, Of course you will need to have PC3200 Ram installed as most 2700 ram will not go to 3200 spec .. All in all still the pound for pound best socket A cpu out there , mine is running Crysis , ut3 and Bioshock what can I say ..I decided to buy , because I already have one in another machine and have been very very pleased with it performance.
