Good Fun
Joan Hess pokes fun at all the Southern stereotypes but she does so with affection. It takes talent to bring characters to life, to make them personalities yo can either love or dislike and to make the story enjoyable. I enjoyed this story. The plot takes a farcical take on a real world issue - the helplessness of a small community when it has no say in a project that could have a major impact on the quality of life - in this case a sewage treatment plant for a nearby city will discharge treated water into a brook running through the town. The town council gets a chance to kidnap the EPA official who is on his way to sign the paperwork in the mistaken belief that the delay will somehow stop the project. An escaped convict, an ambitious barmaid and an equally ambitious local police officer ... Joan Hess pokes fun at all the Southern stereotypes but she does so with affection. The barmaid is murdered and the police chief has her hands full, especially since her mother is one of the towns people involved in the kidnapping. It is raunchy good fun and I would highly recommend it for those who like the genre.

An excellent and funny read
I already owned this book but I bought a copy off of ebay because this one was autographed by the author. The book is a mystery set in a small town of Maggody, Arkansas where nothing is ever supposed to happpen. Until Arly Hanks takes over the police chief job. The town is full of red necks and lots of in breeding so there are a lot of characters in this book that drive Arly up the wall. This includes her mother and her mother's best friend. I enjoyed reading this book as well aa the rest of the Maggody series.I already owned this book but I bought a copy off of ebay because this one was autographed by the author. Joan Hess' Maggody series is funny, witty, mysterious, suspenseful and terrific. There is no other series I have liked better. This book is no exception. Just read one and your hooked. I have all of the Maggody books and am well on my way through reading them. I have not been disappointed yet. I expect not to be. How can you go wrong with Arly, Ruby Bee, Estelle and the love birds Kevin and Dahlia? Read and enjoy!!Joan Hess' Maggody series is funny, witty, mysterious, suspenseful and terrific. There is no other series I have liked better. This book is no exception. Just read one and your hooked. I have all of the Maggody books and am well on my way through reading them.
