Very lightweight for a full-featured camera.
The camera is very compact and easy to carry. It has a multitude of options to be as creative as you like, as well as the auto function for faster use.

Excellent for the Money
For a camera that often costs less than $100 to buy new, it is quite a fully featured camera, offering a range of manual controls and great image quality. Likes -Low Price -5X zoom lens including a 32mm equivalent wideangle, and image stabilization -Lots of manual controls, including ISO up to 1600, PASM modes, white balance set, contrast/saturation/noise reduction/sharpening adjustments, etc. -(subjective) very nice looking camera- feels and handles like a much more expensive point and shoot -Image quality is very good at up to ISO 400 Dislikes -Menu can be fiddly to wade through; not as intuitive as menu systems from Canon -Autofocus in dim light can be pretty slow -Image quality at ISO 800 and above can be pretty grainy. This is a fault almost all point and shoots share Overall, I ... A Camera for the Discriminating Photographer
Panasonic's Lumix series is one of those cameras that stand head and shoulders above the rest of a very crowded pack of digital point-and-shoots. It is very compact, well-constructed, with fantastic optics (Leica). I bought the used LZ8, which is an older model, because my new Lumix FX500 was WAY more camera than I needed. I love the newer one, but decided to "right-size" my purchase because I did not need a camera that had enough technology built in to launch a satellite! The FX500 is one that James Bond would love. But the LZ8, just out of the box, was very easy to use... very intuitive menus, etc. I was making nice photos within 30 minutes of receiving this camera. You get what you pay for - the LZ8 has a plastic + metal body while the higher-end Lumix models (FX) have brushed aluminum ... First thing I do when receiving a new camera is to do an edge-to-edge sharpness test of my own -- the Lumix series passes with flying colors. Another thing they do, that most other cheap cameras do not, is excellent, TRUE MACRO photos. They focus to around 2 inches. That is fantastic, and great for photo-ing my coins that I sell on eBay. That level of Macro focus is equivalent to about a 10x magnification! Fantastic for coins, jewelry, etc. Lumix models are in my Holy Trinity of "fine" but cheaper cameras -- Lumix, Canon PowerShot, and Sony CyberShot. Stick with these and you will always be happy... well, maybe just contented ... but that's better than disappointed!

Excellent little camera
Great point and shoot camera, very easy to use. Has a leica lens. Takes great pictures if you have sufficient light. Image quality drops in low light situations. I use it as my "carry in my pocket camera" 5 times optical zoom. Face recognition technology. Burst mode. Movie mode with sound. 4 out of 5 stars in my book.

this camera is excellent. it offers many manual options for those of us who want more than just a point and shoot but don't want to pay the extra money for a DSLR or high end compact. the picture quality is fantastic. auto focus is fast and effective, and the camera offers a manual exposure option. downsides include the need for a large memory card and a slow switch over from picture viewing to picture taking.this camera is excellent. it offers many manual options for those of us who want more than just a point and shoot but don't want to pay the extra money for a DSLR or high end compact. the picture quality is fantastic. auto focus is fast and effective, and the camera offers a manual exposure option. downsides include the need for a large memory card and a slow switch over from picture viewing to picture taking.
