In the innovative film THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, Jacques Demy pays loving homage to the Hollywood musical as well as the French melodrama. The film is shot in Cherbourg, France, using inventive cinematography and blazing colors and textures. Local life is rendered in pink, orange, green, and blue. Wallpapers and umbrella patterns, sweaters and hats, cars and gas stations--each element of the film contributes to the exuberant color and exalted mood. The film is also unique in the sense that every word is sung. The fertile collaboration between Demy and legendary French composer Michel Legrand reaches its climax in the light opera structure and lilting and memorable songs that make up the plot. Catherine Deneuve is the fresh and beautiful 16-year-old Genevieve, pining away in her mother's umbrella shop. When she falls in love with the charming local auto mechanic, Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), worlds collide. The young couple who, in their innocence, believe that love can overcome all obstacles, face many of them, including Genevieve's disapproving mother, an unexpected pregnancy, and Guy's induction into the French Army. Joy and melancholy suffuse every aspect of the film, which explores both the transience of love and the persistence of affection--motifs that Demy would further develop in his follow-up musical, THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT.

Unadulterated Gorgeous Looking Collectible DVD Item ! ! !
I sadly have never enjoyed the privilege of viewing this ever so popular movie title going by the name of "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg". As a 'advanced' Digital Video Disc Collector solely, who has been 'hunting down' highly sought after and for the most part, very valuable and usually rare/scarce, or in easier to define wording, extremely difficult to locate in regards to their overall availability compared to their video disc counterparts, which the latter can be found with much ease. This Video movie has been Out of Production, hence out of regular circulation for quite some time. As I have read previous reviews concerning this 'French flaired film', this title is a beloved and lovable take on the strongest and most important and powerful feelings that we know of.... LOVE itself. In all ... I sadly have never enjoyed the privilege of viewing this ever so popular movie title going by the name of "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg". As a 'advanced' Digital Video Disc Collector solely, who has been 'hunting down' highly sought after and for the most part, very valuable and usually rare/scarce, or in easier to define wording, extremely difficult to locate in regards to their overall availability compared to their video disc counterparts, which the latter can be found with much ease. LOVE itself. In all its mannerisms. The entire film, as I have understood, is sung rather than spoken by the tremendous cast, that includes the fresh faced complete and utter beauty of Catherine Deneuve in her very first debut of celluloid. Real simple story, Boy meets Girl, put and played against a most luxuriously photographed backdrop. The films score, magnificently put together by Michael Legrand is onto itself yet another wonder that is highly valued and therefore sought after with a 'decent' freight tag, all due to its total beauty and overall scarceness. The Video film itself can be found, usually by 3rd party sellers and or DVD movie collectors online or quite possibly in a 'vintage shoppe' that specializes in pricey film items and film bric-a-brac, (So to speak). This film, found under 'Fox-Lorber', as well as the latter edition of the DVD printing, that being 'Kino-Lorber' are extremely desirable, "As scarce as the day is lengthy", and since it is found by the movie masses as a definite must see film. Trying to locate this particular Digital Video Disc in the best possible viewing condition, may, just may push the buyer into a 'all day affair' of sorts. But simply put, the 'ends will justly and definitely justify the means'! So, expect to lay out major league freight, and perhaps 'pack a lunch or a smorgasbord' in your quest to make this delightful and delicious French leaning cinematic treat your very own! I bought "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" because I love this film since my youth. I love everything in it: beautiful music, actors, views of Cherbourg in rain with its colorful umbrellas... Of course I would prefer to buy a new DVD but the one I bought was used(in good condition). So I am very pleased with my purchase. I am sure I'll watch this film over and over again...
