Garbo was never lovelier.....
"The Painted Veil" produced at MGM as were all of Greta Garbo's American films, was made during the height of Garbo's popularity as a Queen of the Silver Screen. This film has all the necessary elements of a great MGM production, including only the best at MGM including the co-stars. Garbo was never lovelier in any other picture, and that will be remembered more than the Somerset Maughn story. Herbert Marshall, George Brent, Werner Oland, Jean Hersholt and all the cast members were very good as was generally always the case. You may not necessarily find the story line of this film the most memorable, but the exotic, almost dreamy scenes and some of the best Camerawork by Williams Daniels of Garbo with some of the most unusual costumes by Adrian in any Garbo film, ... This film is not a "Camille", "Queen Christina", "Ninotchka" or "Anna Karenina" but it will leave its' imprint on your memory for the beauty Garbo exhibits from the opening scenes to the end of the film. "The Painted Veil" is an homage to the beauty of Greta Garbo and I am sure Irving Thalberg from MGM, had this in mind when approving the making of this film. William Daniels who photographed it obviously did, as was obviously the case with Adrian, as again Garbo never wore such intriguing costumes. Garbo's hair styles in this film are the most hauntingly beautiful (and natural to her) of any film she ever made.
