About this product

Product Information

William Shakespeare's immortal play about a Scottish warrior (Jon Finch) whose wife's lust for power transforms him into inhuman monster is given it's rawest, most brutal screen treatment in this version by Roman Polanski (ROSEMARY'S BABY, CHINATOWN). Filmed in suitably bleak locales and imbued with nudity not usually seen in the works of Shakespeare--along with realistically gory murders--this MACBETH is singular and sensational, but is not for the young or faint of heart.

    Pure Art

Fantastic performances. I read Macbeth - and I loved how it was made into film - even though the special effects of 1971 were nothing compared to today's films. Granted, I'm not a fan of Polanski's personal behavior - but the man's vision and direction were superb and creative. Look past this flaws and you will see a movie that is pure art.

  • Excellent , excellent , excellent !

The best Shakespeare adaption I've ever seen . The final swordfight is unequaled ... brilliant ! The witches are conceived as authentically as possible . The era presented beautifully . A bit gory ,but appropriately so.

  • Polanski’s is the best film version of Macbeth ever made !

Set in the time frame. Gritty & gory. Acting superb ! Love the use of Ross, a minor character in the text as a major player as Macbeth’s henchman. Beautifully filmed.

  • Something wicked this way comes...

This 1971 production of MacBeth, was produced by Hugh Heffner and Playboy Enterprises and written and directed by Roman Polanski with help from Shakesperean scholar Kenneth Tynan. The film is an homage to his to late wife, the actress Sharon Tate who was brutally murdered by Charles Manson and company in 1969 and is truly inspired. Im not really an expert in MacBeth but can make the following observations concerning this performance. 1) surprisingly simple, organic and unassuming rendition not at all grandiose 2) geographically authentic, with many scenes shot on open moors 3) historically authentic, costumes appear to be authentic from the period this NOT a modern dress version 4) casting is surprisingly good altho i think Lady Macbeth (a kind of 'babe' macbeth) is wrongly casted and ...

  • It's Shakespeare

It's the best "MacBeth" movie ever made. The fight scenes are great.
