This isn't a particularly dynamic video, just a basic straight-forward document of a Jerry Garcia Band outing from 1990. This show was an ad-hoc affair anyway (the JGB had agreed to fill the bill after Garcia's 'day-job' band, the Grateful Dead, dropped out due to the sudden death of keyboardist Brent Mydland). Given the make-shift nature of the gig, it's therefore understandable that nothing special was arranged. Still...it's enough. The band was in good form (particularly the tight backing vocals - thank you Ms. Jones and Ms. LaBranch). The set list is representative of the time with a good mix of rock covers, some folk and reggae. Only one Dead tune, though, 'Deal', which closes the first set. (Personally, I was always grateful to hear them cover 'Tangled Up in Blue', which gets a very nice workout here to wrap up the show). The audio is good and clear although my home audio set-up isn't such that I'm in the best position to judge. The camera work is nothing flashy. More often than not, it's 'point-and-shoot' but that's OK. One nice touch is that the menu has a feature with background on each song on the playlist. Thanks for that! This probably isn't going to make any converts but if you're reading this review, you're most likely interested already. In that case, let this deal go down.Read full review
The best JGB dvd available, I actually was at this show, it was scheduled as Dead show but Brent died and instead of just canceling Jerry decided to step-up , even though he had just lost one of his best friends. You can see the sadness(even tears) in his eyes but you also see a smile on his face as soon as the music starts. Jerry is an emotional player and I think something clicked that night, the darkness of Brents sad demise was transformed into spirit lifting tones. I felt like I was watching this man work through his pain using music as the expressive force and his glances into the audience seem to say the show must go on and how sweet it is to be loved by all of you. This is pure Jerry creaminess , you will be left grinning.
My favorite DVD ever! My buddy “borrowed” this from me about a decade and I never saw it again until I reordered it and here it is! Brand new! Jerry is in good form at this show but Melvin Seals is on Fire! Best 3 hours of music you will ever hear. From God to Jerry and Melvin to Us!
